So my engine is out... now what?
Hey everyone, I have posted a couple of times on here. Got my first 1992 FD3, pulled the engine the other day it was blown, I have a 13B with a street port ready to go in, however whilst it is out I want to change anything that is worth changing, even things that are just for piece of mind as I think it just makes sense doing it now. I would be hugely happy if someone with vast amounts of knowledge could help me at all, this is my first ever car project and if I am honest, I am still gaining knowledge about everything regarding the car, both of my engines came basically as an engine with all ancillaries disconnected, I have 2 boxes of parts from both engines, I really want to understand how everything works together and although my budget isn't 100% set, I would rather spend the cash on parts for the engine.
Its vague what I am asking, I would massively appreciate a good chat with someone.
Sorry I am still a noob, and really need to gain more confidence when it comes to the project ( the engine intimidates me )
Kind regards
Liam

The Factory Service Manual is the place to start on the HOW-TO side. There are also some videos available.

Big thing really is just to evaluate everything and see if it needs to be replaced. If a hose is swollen and chewed up, replace it, for example.
Few things I would check/look at. This all assumes you are starting with a new short block, just the keg, and bolting all the manifolds and everything on.
- Lower intake manifold to engine gasket. This should be a metal layered gasket. If you have the original paper gasket, replace it. If the old metal one is in good shape it's typically reusable.
- Lower intake manifold to upper intake manifold gasket - same thing, should be metal.
- check out the clutch, replace if significantly worn.
- Oil metering pump lines, if they are brown and brittle they are worth replacing with new. Get Mazda OEM lines, there are stainless braided lines but they cost more and are a LOT harder to work with. The stock lines will last 100,000 miles no problem.
- Replace any cracked/brittle/loose vacuum lines with silicone. If there are rubber stock hoses that are baked on there just leave them be, they are fine.
- New spark plugs
- New Mazda thermostat (I don't trust aftermarket thermostats)
- Any worn/swollen/cracked coolant hoses

Really depends on how far you want to go, could convert to electric water pump, delete power steering and/or A/C, what are your plans for the car? Track, street, street and occasional track, show, if track what kind? Drag, autox, time attack, rally (please no).
You have the engine out, try the paper gasket or silk thread to seal the oil pump.
Keeping the twins? Simplified sequential/efini y-pipe. Going single - delete tons of stuff.
Keeping ABS, cruise, pop-ups?
Chase Bays has a brake booster delete kit which cleans up a bunch, proline motorsport has a nice ABS delete kit, ignition upgrade - IGN-1A, dual oil coolers/really good single one
Def do what Dale recommended - aka reliability mods.
I applaud you for this question, get stuff done while you have the room to do it.....wish I did when I had my WRX.
