Rotary Mechanic Issues -- Help! (its long)
All,
I need some advice. I apologize if this is the wrong place for this and I also apologize for the length! I will do a tl;dr to summarize.
tl;dr - I brought my car to a rotary shop to get a clutch, 5th gear synchro fix, diff leak fixed, oil pain leak fixed, plug wires, pulley squeak fixed and an adaptronic installed. That was 6-months ago and $11,000.98 with $11,607.68 in new invoices for a total of $22,609.66! Am I missing something? Is this what it costs to replace these items? Over $15k of that is labor! Is 6-months reasonable for these items? I don't even know what to think. I am completely exhausted dealing with this and I still don't even have the car.
Now for the long part!
I found a mechanic on these forums earlier this year that had some good reviews (both here and on google/facebook). They are a relatively small shop but were by far the closest to my location. I called them up and had a great conversation with the mechanic -- he was very knowledgeable on the subject of rotaries and it seemed like a great fit. I said I was looking for a clutch replacement and transmission 5th gear synchro fix. He insisted on doing a overall check of the car first then go from there. That seemed very reasonable and I agreed.
I dropped my car of April 25th, 2018. He said he would have a report done in a couple weeks max, possibly sooner. I said sure. He said he needed to have me sign some paperwork before he begins.
May 5th, 2018 -I sent a quick email asking if there happened to be an update. Hoping he may have been able to get to it sooner or maybe he simply forgot to send me the paperwork. No response.
May 8th, 2018 - I sent another email requesting the paperwork at least. He responded this time with some basic terms/agreement asking me to respond stating I agreed with the terms. I reviewed them and responded with agreement.
May 16th, 2018 - I receive the diagnostic report. It has everything from shocks/struts to intercooler piping to replacement of my newly purchased PowerFC. It is a very exhaustive report with great detail. I was impressed. At the end of the report he recommended a ton of items to change/upgrade/fix.
Invoice 1:
$1340.00 Report
May 19th, 2018 - I review the report and state in an email,"I will say I would like to move forward with the clutch, transmission, the oil pan leak, diff seals, plugs/wires (not coils yet), water pulley and get an adaptronic in there for a road tune."
June 4th, 2018 - The mechanic says he has some ideas for the car and wants to discuss them with me. He insists on calling. I request that he email me with a summary of the request. At this point I was becoming a little worried about his lack of communication/responses to phone calls and emails. I get no response.
June 11th, 2018 - I receive a phone call and we discuss a parts list to start the repairs/build out. It consists of an adaptronic ECU, Magnacore plug wires, NGK plugs, Pettit water pulley and alt pulley, Exedy Twin Disc, Adaptronic ECU FP PNP, Adaptronic Air Sensor -
Invoice:
$3609.13.
I ask for the quickest method of payment and explain I really want to drive this car this summer!
June 12th, 2018 - I ask again how I should pay with my credit card.
June 13th, 2018 - He says he will call me and get my credit card information.
August 8th, 2018 - He finally calls and I am pretty upset about his lack of response and how long it is taking to even start the work! He states he has been working on the vehicle and found out I need a new diff too. I say I am fed up at this point and want to come get the car. He starts apologizing for not being able to focus his work on the vehicle and his lack of communication. He says the transmission is torn apart and that it would be silly to come get the car. He somehow talks me out of it and into adding in a OS Giken diff. He also promises a much better experience in the future and offers $300 off storage costs (he is charging me $150/month for storage). He also sends detailed pictures of parts of the process -- which was very cool and I appreciated it.
I receive 5 invoices for parts, storage labor and PFC shipping for me:
$942.85 additional parts (counterweight, misc stuff)
$1595.00 OS Giken diff
$300 (he reduced this by $300) storage
$3180.00 labor thus far
$35 - shipping of my old PowerFC to buyer
August 9th, 2018 - I pay the new invoices. He explains that the diff is back ordered and will take some time to receive. I looked around myself and saw it was pretty much sold out everywhere so I said so be it.
Sept. 4th - I receive an email stating he diff cleared customs and that it should be in his hands soon.
Sept. 14th - He receives the diff. and sends me an email.
Sept. 24th - I call him and he calls back a few hours later saying he is still working on the car and has a ton of pictures to send to me.
Sept. 28th - I receive the pictures. I am on vacation at this point so I don't respond for a couple days.
Oct. 1st - I respond thanking for the pictures. He responds saying the car is set to be tuned on the dyno October 4th and would be done Thursday the 11th.
Oct. 4th - I ask how the dyno went.
Oct. 5th - He explained that it didn't go on the dyno for a multitude of reasons TPS and another person on the dyno had issues so it set things back. He stated he was pretty sure he had a used TPS so he said he is still shooting for the 11th for pickup.
Oct. 10th - I ask if pickup is still happening on the 11th. He says he rescheduled to the 16th and pickup is on the 17th.
Oct. 11th - He sends more pics and says invoices are coming shortly.
Oct 15th - Still no invoices so I sent an email requesting them. He says they are still not done and he says a few things he has been doing on the car.
I receive 4 invoices.
Invoice 1;
$4380 Labor
$626.38 Parts/misc
Invoice 2:
$4740 Labor
$44.70 Oil/lube/etc
Invoice 3:
$1710 Labor
$147.60 Misc parts
Invoice 4:
-$45 credit since Air Temp sensor was not needed.
This brings the total to $22,609.66 for a clutch, new diff, water pulley, oil pan leak fix, adaptronic ECU install (untuned). It hasn't even been on the dyno yet!
What can I do? BBB? Is this crazy enough to involve a lawyer for consumer protection? Or am I just overreacting? I can post invoices if anyone is interested. The labor descriptions are detailed, almost too detailed because it is hard to say which item from my scope of work was being worked on. He seemed to have mixed them quite a bit.
Thank you for any help/advice on this!

Thanks for sharing your story about the car repair. IMO, that is way too much money to spend on the repairs you described. For example, I spent about $8k on a motor rebuild. My transmission was notching into 5th gear at that time but my rotor mechanic sent it to a trans expert. Turned out that notchy feeling into 5th gear was the result of the wrong fluid. My 5th gear & synchro was fine. That charge to inspect it was very reasonable. I'd like to think I was lucky! Sorry for the digression. I would suggest that you reach out to your mechanic to challenge the repair costs. Parts are one thing, but labor time seems exceptionally excessive. You may also want to consider contacting the BBB to see what recourse is available in your state.

I want to also note I am obviously not out to smear the company -- they are super knowledgable rotorheads -- I fear I just may have got the short end of the stick! I want to give them a fair shake but I also want my car back for what we originally (verbally) agreed on for pricing which was ~$10k. I honestly reduced that down to $6k after discussing plans on June the 11th for the car because of my mother having financial woes that I needed to help with. I was under the impression after the $10k invoice was paid in August the car was pretty much complete! I guess I was wrong. Ugh.

What is their shop labor rate? $500/hr?
Are you sure that you are interpreting the invoices correctly? Maybe the labor cost is just being rolled forward and you should not be adding them all together? Something is not right and this may just be a misunderstanding of how their invoice looks. It does sound like you have about $10K in parts, between the ECU, Clutch, Diff etc. The parts do not install themselves, however the labor does seem excessive without knowing all the details.
No shop should be charging storage on a car that they are currently working on. That is just insane.

$120/hr this is reduced from $135/hr when you go through them for parts. Unfortunately they are not rolled forward. The invoices have separate dates on them with labor costs. Based upon invoices there has been $6,995.66 in parts and shipping of said parts (from twist ties, to the adaptronic). The rest is labor and $300 for storage (which was $600 originally so there is another $300 due at some point). They charge to keep the car inside while they work on it. It is free if they can put it in the parking lot outside. One of the invoices has labor costs for "Updating pics" as part of the description!

Sorry to hear that and it sounds like I need to raise our labor rate. You have not posted the invoices so it is hard to say if they did enough work to come up with 90+ hours of labor. Charging to taking pictures of the progress on a project that is taking longer than expected is obscene. We build every customer a complete webpage that details all the work and parts added. It is time consuming and we have to pay to host the pages, but it gives piece of mind for the customer and we can look back at a project from 10 years ago and see exactly what we did. We do not charge for this at all. Hope you get it sorted out.

Thank you FührerTüner! That is 100x better.
Also, please keep in mind that the dates reflected on the invoice does not mean I received them at that time. I received the majority of invoices August 8th, and October 15th.

At least they took very detailed notes on labor.
Parts list looks reasonable to me.
1 thing that sticks out to me is the pre dyno check. I know its peanuts compared to everything else, but they are basically charging you to go over their own work....
So they have 125 hours into the car, we just need to find if that amount is fair and reasonable. I kinda made a list of the labor outlined above.
- Trans removal & install (turbo removal required for the trans to come out)
- Clutch, fly, pilot, SS clutch line removal and install.
- Trans rebuild
- Diff removal & install
- Complete diff rebuild with new LSD
- Press in/out diff bushings
- starter relay bypass
- Fuel pump rewire with relays
- Adaptronic install and plumbing
- LIM/UIM removal/install with block off plates and TB gasket.
- Harness repair and shielded
- Pull gauge cluster for Wideband install???
- Oil pan reseal
- replace idler bearing and pulley, water pump pulley install

8.5 hrs for inspection + an addition $320 for compression and smoke test is not realistic. I have never spent more than 2-3hrs inspecting any car, that includes a compression test as well as road test. The engine could be removed from the car and stripped down in that amount of time.
I agree the pre dyno inspection is a bs charge, they just spent months inspecting/repair everything and there is no MAF to clean.
This must be a single turbo. How poorly done was everything when you brought it in? I have seen some terrible builds that require a ton of rework, which it is sounding like this car might have been.
Post up pictures of what they were dealing with.

Thank you for the rundown. I actually asked the mechanic to do the same thing and he said that it would take a very long time to do. He would not be able to get it done (just the writeup) until next Monday.
I feel like there were a lot of items that he took liberty into modifying/replacing without my consent. I agree on the the dyno readiness thing too. I think it may just be an ol' fashioned nickel-and-diming.
I have searched for some general costs for the big ticket items like:
Transmission rebuild - ~$1750 (parts + labor)
Clutch replacement - ~$800 (labor)
Oil pan reseal - $500-$750 (labor)
DIff rebuild - ~$700? (labor) I didn't seem to find a ton of good info on a complete diff rebuild.
I totally understand that these numbers may not be super accurate since they are just general thread finds and there are so many variables but are they at least ballpark? I mean $15k in labor (~$14k if we exclude the first diagnostic report) Is there a source where I could get average cost for the items in my original scope? I mean some of these items weren't even on the diagnostic report!

They ripped you off. Get a lawyer involved. I don't understand why you are protecting them by with holding their name.
When a shops name comes out they are either quick to fix the problem or show their true colors and the community can then avoid them.
The labor is outrageous.

Thanks again for all the help. It has been over 10-years since I last had an FD and was part of this community and I am quickly remembering why it is so great!

I have a couple voicemails/emails out to lawyers and I was waiting to talk to them before I post anything about the shop. I also really wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy in thinking this whole thing is completely outrageous!

Something smells bad here...
IMO, the overly-detailed labor list is a red flag. It contains a huge amount of minor stuff that most shops don't have the time or patience to list, IMO, in an attempt to support an exorbitant labor bill. Shops I'm familiar with don't detail every tiny thing to anywhere near that degree - they just can't spare the time.
Of course, I'm used to having work done by reputable shops that I've dealt with continually for many years on racecars or racecar engines, so my viewpoint may be warped.
IMO, the overly-detailed labor list is a red flag. I have over 450 pictures that tell a similar story. A lot of pictures just for the sake of pictures. Normally I would say the more the merrier but since there is a labor description which includes "Pics" ...apparently that was something I was paying for?
Unfortunately I cannot post the pics quite yet because they are watermarked with the shop logo. I am hopeful after some discussions tomorrow I should be good to post.
Thank you everyone!
