Requesting help- Track car seat height
Requesting help- Track car seat height
To the point—I have a sunroof-equipped ‘94 which I’ve been building (principally for track purposes) over the past 6 months. I just sat in it with my helmet on and found it’s not possible. I’m 6’2” and cannot make a safe seating position.
To say I feel a fool is true. Can you folks help me sort out this situation? I really want this car.
Thanking you in advance- Rick

Im 6’2” and have a bride vios with a low seat rail. Id have no issues with a helmet. No sunroof car.
maybe someone can chime in that has a sunroof. Recaro pole positions are a little more american size friendly.

The key is, find a race seat that fits you. Many race seats have trouble fitting in the FD because the shoulder wing hits the door, but in a track car its less an issue if you don't mind cutting or removing the door card. Then get a race fab shop to create a fixed mount with the bottom of the seat on the floor of the car, and tip it back a little so you have max headroom.
Thanks ptrhahn for the direct thoughts on my next step.
I had planned to replace the door panels with plastic or aluminum fabrications knowing that seat width is an important consideration. So the counsel to first select the right seat (a LOW-sitting right seat) is what I’ll do. Then hope I can fit into it with a custom fixed rail seat mount.
That’ll be my plan. Ill update the forum with steps and results. Regards-Rick

Not sure fiddling with the stock seats will help that much. The springs in my seat are pretty worn so it sits an inch or two lower than the passanger seat and at 5'10" i have trouble with a helmet (have to lean the seat back to keep from scrapping the roof). The only solution is to mount a race seat to the floor and at over 6' you may need to do something about the sunroof.
Good luck

The stock seats with stock rails won't get you to where you want to be, I don't think. I had the same problem and I am 6 ft. tall. Made tracking the car a neck crunching experience.
My solution was to use Sparco Evo seats combined with Bride Low Max rails, and I have been able to drop the seats down low enough to fit in the car with a helmet. I still remove the bottom seat cushions and replace it with a thin pad for tracking, but it works well. You can trim the fiberglass back bottom outside of the seats to get them to drop as low as you want them. I used a dremel to notch out a small section of where the seat bucket hit the rails in the back. It doesn't take much to get the seat to drop as low as you need it, or all the way to the floor if you like. I posted up pics of this in the "What seats fit?" thread. Check it out. For me, I only needed to trim maybe about a 1.5 inch notch in the bucket to get the fit perfect for me.
Here is a link to the Bride Low Max rails, which work well and lower the seat more than any I have seen.

As for the Sparcos hitting and rubbing the side door panels, I wanted to keep everything stock, so I trimmed the sides of the seat "wings" to where they don't rub anymore. I also did this on the inside left of the passenger seat as it rubbed the center console. You can pretty much trim as much as you like as you then pop the seat cover back on to cover it all up.
