Rattling in the transmission

Hi guys, been away from the car for a very long time, but now have had a re interest in my car again.
I’ve pulled the trigger and am going to get it back on the road.
first step is to fix the issue with the transmission. It’s a very strange rattling noise when the clutch is engaged but noise goes away when the clutch pedal is pushed in and disengaged.
Any help is much appreciated.
maybe I’ll be back on this forum after almost a decade. Thanks.

Could be throwout bearing, could be nature of the clutch if you have a multi plate setup.

Couple things....

A bad throwout bearing will chirp when the pedal is pressed. A multi plate clutch will rattle with the pedal pressed, this is the mid plate assembly moving around. Both of these will go away with the clutch engaged ( pedal out). If you’re having an issue with a rattle while parked with the clutch out but goes away with the clutch depressed it could be the input shaft bearing starting to go ( or any on the main shaft really) or it could be as simple as a loose component under the car like the exhaust or shield. Take a peek under the car and try to isolate the noise.

Ps~ If you still can’t figure it out. I’m probably 45 minutes from you in Millersville, i’d be happy to take a peek at it one weekend if you wanted to swing down my way.

I don’t know....I’m not saying it’s definitely the source of the rattle, but not certain the throw-out (clutch release) bearing can be ruled out. When the pedal is depressed the noise stops. That’s also when the release bearing assembly is under load. Couldn’t the bearing itself be OK but something on the bearing collar be messed up? One of the ears that the fork inserts into maybe? And I wonder if there’s a noise associated with a broken clutch fork spring?

^^^

I’ve definitely seen it both ways with the throw out as you’re describing. Hell, my old Jeep Wrangler would make a sound like a supercharger wining with the clutch out but would disappear when I press on the clutch and load it up some. He can jack the car up put it on stands and start it to see where the rattling is coming from. That way he could isolate it.

Forgot how helpful this forum was. I’m prob close to a 20year member lol.

yeah, it rattles hard, a hard tapping type noise

I wish it was as simple as anything that doesn’t require not haven’t to take down the trans. I was hoping he missed something that could require not having to drop trans cuz that’s more money for me.

Took it to a buddy who is not an rx7 expert but he’s a mech and he’s not sure what it is, but he says prob a bearing. hes prob gonna take the trans down and take a look. Says a small chance it could be the clutch itself or inside trans.
How can I upload a video to this site. Doesn’t look like I can get it to upload directly I think.

@gdub29e really appreciate that. Even just to meet up would be cool. Maybe I’ll decide to keep the car and clean it completely in and out. Runs strong but it’s trash.

I’m sure your guy would of caught something blatantly obvious. You could always pull the inspection covers off the transmission and take a peek around the clutch area. Not saying this next part is the correct way to fix something but, sometimes when things sit for a long period of time bearings dry out etc. etc. you may just wanna drive it around the neighborhood a bunch getting it up to temperature and see if it goes away. You really don’t have anything to lose.

I’m always down to meet up and or help the RX7 guy’s & gals. ( even the V8 weirdos )

Also another thing is after driving the car around for a maybe 1-2 weeks, it happened on the highway. Wasn’t driving it hard and out of the ordinary just started happening.
