noise from rear when clutch in
My 1990 GTU makes a low frequency noise from the rear when the clutch is disengaged and the car is facing up a slight incline or slowly rolling backwards. The noise sounds like a big truck is honking its horn, or a goose with a deep voice. The noise stops when I let the clutch out, press the brake pedal, or if the car rolls backwards a little faster. It does this regardless of which gear I'm in.
I've found people describing this problem on other sites, but no real information about the cause. Can someone suggest what might be going on here?

update: It made the same noise today when I was pulling out of my driveway in reverse, clutch engaged.
The car will be in the shop next week. Hopefully my next post will describe the cause of and solution to this issue, even though no one seems interested.
