Rack and pinion ?

Hey any one here had an experience on rebuild rack and pinion ?To day i was under the FD fixing some leaks and saw my steering boost is zipping steering fluid. I think the seal in the rack is bad so i was thinking to pull the rack out and rebuild it .How difficult is’t to do?

The 5 cent spring clip that holds the non pinion end-stop is a ***** to remove intact I will say - and I recall you needed to buy the 3 or 4 pieces involved to get that as a serviceable part! Other than that, nothing stands out in the memory as particularly difficult. If you don't want to buy a Mazda kit of seals, a sample and a bearing supply might be best, if only one seal is bad.

No idea but...
I remember people used to send their racks to Maval Gear for a rebuild and conversion to manual steering so maybe ping them for parts or to rebuild.

Last time I sent a rack to them it magically produced a binding issue that wasn't there before along with the serial number sticker mysteriously disappearing. Still convinced they swapped my rack with someone else's.

I also sent them a mk3 supra rack to rebuild. Got it back with a zip tie bolted down between two parts near the input shaft and with a static leak. They told me it wasn't their fault and they would "do me a favor" by warranty-ing it out. They said *JUST* remove it and send it back. Didn't even offer to cover shipping. The rack still leaks to this day. Mk3 supra rack removal requires dropping the subframe.

I'm over them and their nonsense. Phoenix rack and axle has been doing well by me so far. Their record keeping is *** and no one there is interested in being held accountable for what they say or do but the racks I've received from them have all been great.

Also steer clear of Detroit axle. Probably the biggest circus in America those people. Sent me a rack for a Ford Taurus when I ordered one for a Cressida. The part number written on the rack was different than what was written on the box and also written on the packing slip that was in the box. The rack also said FORD on it in big stylized letters. When I brought it up to them, they didn't believe me, I sent pictures and they said they needed to investigate.

They came back and realized I was telling the truth and then said they would send the correct one as soon as they received the Ford one back. That turned into a 2 month waste of time before ultimately receiving the correct rack. There's more to the story but it was an absolute freak show dealing with them.

Chipp motorsports also offers a rack service. I will be using him to convert a rack to manual at some point...

Wonderous bread rebuilt his FC rack, and it looks fairly simple https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread.../#post12516505
