That is true.
Many modern piston engines still end up combusting far more oil than the rotaries though.
Mazda could potentially eliminate oil injection through design and materials like better apex seal cooling through the rotor, changing apex seals to ceramic or something self lubricating, ceremet coating on rotor housings instead of chrome, changing geometry for lower apex seal sliding speeds, alternate fuels (cooler burning), fuel additives (an onboard container of clean burning or non-burning lubricant), etc.
A major rotary oil consumption point to date has been the uneven heating/expansion of the side housing surface and the oil control seals not conforming to the side housings.
Mazda did a big study on it, so they likely have feasible solutions.

I've driven just a couple of EVs, and I've always been happy with the power but wished for something with the lightweight and 'eager to dance' personality like our FD chassis has. Hopefully a hybrid rotary engine would allow for that, by replacing 50+kWh of heavy batteries with a lightweight rotary 'generator' engine and reasonably sized fuel tank. It could also allow for a peaky rotary engine without needing to worry about idle or part-throttle response, if it only acts as a generator it shouldn't need to run at low RPM / low power.
The diesel truck crowd has figured out how to use DEF fluid, and there are still plenty of 2-stroke dirbikes and snowmobiles and ATVs using actual premix. I suspect RX-EV owners could figure out how to fill a little premix tank, especially if the car had a sensor and idiot light. With a modern dashboard it could show a photo of a little Idemitsu bottle (or Valvoline or Lucas or whatever you can actually find at the local gas station).

[QUOTE=Federighi;12502162]Smoke and mirrors!
Ha, you beat me to it and took the words right out of my mouth. Very cool patent yes and I'm game for a little e-rotary for sure. Great eye on the 3-Rotor Group S Rally Prototype RX-7S too! I think you're onto something. I am not a fan of the video game car so I'll pass on the vision personally. And I don't see why it's so hard to get it made. Hiroshima literally rose from the ashes of a nuclear attack and rebuilt their city. Building a car is nothing, change your perspective.
But imo. Regardless of 'clicks' (who gauges anything by that anyways) there's very little excitement in the real world / reality for mazda today. Just because a site generates traffic, those 'dollars don't make cents' because people 'vote' with their pocket book and mazda enthusiasts (in general) are frugal to put it kindly and from what I've gathered are not buying new product... I personally think if mazda were serious about saving their *** they'd send out their race cars on tours to dealer + host car events, etc which would at least get people inside their showrooms and then you'd have the slightest possibility of selling a new product. And I'm talking about one of the largest North American dealers here. There's definitely budget for something like this. Just a thought.
*** Was going to edit my unsavory comments. These provide no value to the thread. My apologies club.***
