Are the engines I see Ihor at IRPerformance getting in factory remans?

 

They aren't remans, they are all new engines with all new parts made by Mazda in Japan. Not a single used part in them.

Thanks, Dale. I thought so. I used to worry about motors or motor parts going NLA. If they just would do the interior plastics, vinyl, and seats, that would help a lot.

Haven’t checked in a while, but guessing a set of new housings are now over $2k...roughly half of a complete new engine. No idea on a set of side plates. I don’t know, maybe that’s in line with costs on say...a LS V8. And I’m happy that MAZDA is still making new short blocks. But is it normal when, as j9fd3s pointed out, it makes more sense to buy an engine instead of a couple of housings, some gaskets and seals?

 

The cost of the parts for Mazda is MUCH lower than it would be for us. They are getting major parts straight from their own foundry, whereas parts we get are boxed, shipped, warehoused, and sold by a dealership or distributor. That's a lot of people taking a piece of the action.

I hope these new engines stay available for a LONG time to come, that is a wonderful resource to have. I would LOVE to have one for myself but that kind of money really needs to go into a paint job .

I think Johnny K just bought 2 new engines for his 4 rotor build.

 

it was a worry, but as it turns out Mazda has a whole rotary engine plant that does nothing but make FD and Rx8 engines, and so that is what they have been doing. if they had retooled for an Rx9, then we might have had engines go NLA.

and this is what has happened with the piston engines, when they retooled the plant for the Skyaktiv stuff, they no longer have engine parts for the miatas

 

yes its ALWAYS been cheaper to buy the complete assembly. the only thing that has changed is that the whole assembly is NEW instead of a dubious reman.

if you're bored pelican parts has an engine builder thing, as does flyin miata, they make the rotary look cheap

for the miata they did press some new sheet metal, so big parts yes. FD rear window is still available

 

Are clusters still available LHD? Mine burnt out and I have no ODO.

 

Usually they just need the circuit board sent out for repair. Or, you can do it yourself if you're handy.

 

Late 2019 I was at a cars and coffee meet in Hiroshima Japan and there was a man I met who worked at Mazda. He told me that reproducing Rx-7 Parts was being worked on in another department but didn’t say when they would be available.

once they pick a part to reproduce, they take the drawings and update them to the current spec (some form of CAD) and then find someone who can make it, if the original vendor is not still there. and then make the parts, send some to the US and then make a list and then put that out

its available in Japan, Mazda USA doesn't carry it. if you call Mazdacomp they may be able to order one, although it takes a long time

I was able to source an OEM windshield from Mazda HQ in SoCal via a local glass shop. I think they had multiple shade tints too?

i just made a list of glass for the FD, and i went by year, but which one was different? 1993 is the odd one, and then 1994-2002 are the same tint, they use the same door glass

 

IIRC it's depends on year and paint color.

 

its just by year. 1993 is one and 1994 and up appear to be the other, but i have no idea which one is which.
