Thats what I was thinking, and I have found black paint under the yellow in spots on the vehicle, but a lot of the car is yellow, such as under the hood and in the trunk. So maybe the previous owner was trying to pass it off as a CYM? Also how would I tell if I have a R1 or not? Don't have the bose sound system but could anyone chimie in as to what would be some features to look for? Sorry to derail the thread....

I agree with this man. Regarding cars that are rarely driven I see it two ways.

If you keep it forever what you end up having is a very nice museum piece. But if you eventually sell it you basically just stored the car for someone else to enjoy. Screw it, my motto is to enjoy my car to the fullest. When I die I cant take it with me anyway.

RCCAZ 1 = 71,000

IMO, the cars under 10K could be worth something in 10 years or so if the mileage remains low and all of the stock pieces are retained. Low mileage in stock condition is something a collector will be looking for, when and IF these ever become hot in the collector car market.

 

R models came with cloth seats, no sunroof, dual oil coolers, rx7 strut bar, stiffer suspension. Now everything except the sunroof can be swapped in or out, so if your car has one you automatically know that it isn't an R. Given that all the other parts are interchangeable it makes it difficult to be certain just by visual inspection alone. The most common scenario is that R model parts were swapped in into a non R model. But it can be the other way around too. Seriously you never know what these cars have gone through over the years. Maybe a previous owner liked the PEP package better and had leather seats put it in? Or maybe the car was in a minor front end collision and the cheapest way to replace the dual coolers was with a single one. Get my drift? You just never know.

Now if you really want to know for certain, the best way is to write down your vin number and contact Mazda corp with your inquiry. They do answer those requests via customer service.

I have added about 10k miles on mine in the 2 years of owning it. Qball hardly drove it and we think that is why the water seals went bad and he had to have a rebuild. This FD does not like to sit more than 6 days and is very ready to tell me when I wait longer than that.
IMO years from now it will be nice to go the Petersen Automotive Museum and perhaps see one of these low mileage guys in there. Of course I will probably be doing this with my great grandkids.
