Yoshi... I care. I would add the 240-280Z's to the list of Japanese collectibles. My sister had one out in LA in 1972 and I drove it while I was out there. Bought a 1972 Alfa 2000 GT though and soon forgot about it. I remember that I was not yet a real believer in Japanese cars, but thought the 240Z was a baby Jaguar e-type coupe. The 240 cost about 3600-3700 or right about the cost of a BMW 2002 of the same era, performed about the same except had a slightly higher top end. Kelvin Hiraishi who heads R&D for Mazda has a beautiful 1972 orange Fairlady that he shows around southern California.

Haven't you seen the 10 bajillion posts of my brother's RB25 280Z that I've already posted? ^.^
I love love love love 240-280Z's. Stock motor, turbo L28's, RB motors, 2JZ, doesn't matter. I love em'.

I don't know guys, I wouldn't call this ugly or outdated. It's not any less or any more outdated than a RX7, NSX or GTR. And you can't say a Supra is not a special car cause like I said before all these cars have their strengths and weaknesses kind of like superheroes. So comparing them to each other is like comparing Batman, Superman, Hulk, Flash etc.....

Bryan,
I love vipers and if and when I go big block/muscle car that will likely be the one I drive but don't be surprised if 10 years down the road the GTS is gone and the FD is still calling your name.

I don't see a supra being a collectable. I think they are expensive because of their motors and their well deserved reputation. I don't see anything about them that makes them unique outside of their performance. There will always be faster cars in the future so I feel like they don't stand the test of time as well as an Rx7, NSX or a 240z
I have to comment here. First off there were only roughly 6600 TURBO MKIVs that were sold in the US, half of the total number of FDs. Add the fact only 2300 were 6 speeds and you have a collectable. Turbo Supras are simply more rare than the FD.
I have spent a lot of times around Supras back when I was buying and selling a lot with SpeedForSale.com. I will argue to my death the FD is a more fun car to drive and looks better. However, trying to say a RX7, NSX or 240 will stand the test of time over a Supra is a big reach. Mazda and Nissan put out great efforts with the RX7 and 300Z but Toyota really had their **** together with the MKIV Supra.
A factory engine(with aftermarket head studs), transmission and rear diff that could handle repeat abuse from 1000+rwhp setups was unheard of back then. No one knew what that car was capable of until the late 90s except for Toyota. The over all quality of that car is leaps and bounds ahead of the FD and a good bit ahead of the 300zx. The stock computer can run about 5-6psi of boost over the factory setting safely and the car can make 420-440rwhp with exhaust, bbc, and FMIC. The braking of the Supra wasnt rivaled by many if any in its time. Here is a quote I found from a magazine source "This unique Formula One-inspired braking system allowed the Supra Turbo to record a 70 mph (110 km/h) -0 braking distance of 149 feet (45 m),[20] the best braking performance of any production car tested in 1997 by Car and Driver magazine. This record was finally broken in 2004 by 3 feet (0.91 m) by a Porsche Carrera GT."
As much as I make fun of the MKIVs and especially their owners there are really only a handful of cars that can compare to them in an all around performance test, and they are all exotics with the exception of the Viper and New Z06 which still arent cheap.
Ive yet to find another car that "does it" for me like the FD anywhere in a comparable price range. Though I will never own a MKIV Supra(its a matter of principle from all the crap I have talked over the years) I can appreciate what Toyota accomplished 20 years ago long before anyone else.

My buddy just sold his 50,000 mile FD in fantastic condition for $12,XXX. It was on the market for a few years. Another friend *Cowsniper* just sold his single turbo highly modded FD for $7,000.
It's been a downward spiral since 06 it seems.
This is the worst time for predictions....

Oh yea, to answer the question of the thread. I did actually make the decision to give up my latest FD(Streetport,500R, ETC) for something different. Its a little less practical than the FD even but I have wanted one ever since I got my first ride in one 6 years ago.
Bought a 2005 Black one on Monday and should have it on Thursday of next week.

Nah - professionally modded, clean cars (or stock very low mileage) are still selling for about 18-20k, I've seen it first hand in the for sale section. Hack jobs don't command a good price, I think the buyers are just more savvy/knowledgeable now

^^I'm now sold on GTR! LOL!
Opps.. This comment on Vikings.
David, I also agree with you on the Supra.. They are rare when it comes to turbo versions and also reliability and potential mod, higher than NSX. I would at this point buy a Supra before NSX Also, most Supra owners I have met were much cooler here in SE than NSX owner. I need to put that disclaimer because I'm sure it could be different at other places.

Sold my blue FD in 06 for $28,500. Sold an equally nice (highly modded FD) last summer for $16,xxx.
You're crazy to believe low mile FD's are selling for $18k-20k. I guess if you see it listed for that much, they actually sell for that much?
Or, are you still trolling?

Only time will tell. It appears the prices on NSX's have bottomed out and are starting to rise again.

Also, lets look at personal attachment factor comparison on FD vs. NSX. I feel like when you wrench on your own car or personalize your own car, you tend to keep it longer. Most NSX owners do very little of that and also much smaller amount then FD owners. That also plays a roll when new NSX comes out, more people would get rid of it to upgrade... Again, I'm sure there are exceptions but that's my current theory.

True, only time will tell.. But unlike when RX8 came out and didn't really affect the FD market, I think when and if new NSX comes out, it will make a difference in old NSX market. Why do I predict this? 1. new NSX will probably out perform old NSX, 2. the way most NSX owners have been doing... which is upgrade to a newer, lower mileage NSX. My prediction is that most will get rid of it and update/upgrade...

We all need to be realistic and understand that the NSX was and will always be a one off. There’s way too much talk trying to drag the 1990 based NSX into the 21st century and compare to current cars such as the Audi R8/10, Nissan GTR R35, Porsche, Ferrari etc. to a 20 year old car. Even the last 2005 NSX is a 20 year old car. If Honda spent even half of the original development funds in the later years on the NSX then we would have a supercar that wouldn't be looked at as - gee nice car to drive but doesn’t stack up to anywhere near its rivals in today’s terms.
Honda made a decision years ago that the NSX was it, no more, nada, that’s it. I believe the only people that haven’t realised there's not going to be another NSX is NSX Owners. We are the only ones that are holding onto the past where as the rest of the world has moved on. I will state the bleeding obvious - there will be no further, other, replacement NSX........same can be said about the 4th gen 7.

I'm sure it can be done with the right marketing, eventually finding the right buyer. But to think these cars can easily pull big dollar like the old days is just a fantasy.. no financing kills these cars, same with the NSX.
