Best looking aftermarket, old-school looking radio
Hi all. Im looking at putting a new radio in my fd but want something that looks atleast a little period correct. Mrmatt3465s radio install looks awesome. Is there any others out there that are also very fitting for the car? Post yours!
You can pick up era correct head units from Protege and Miata that match the interior very well. While you are at the wreckers, why not pick up several? I believe Mazda had four versions of the head units in period used across their range.
The Blaupunkt Frankfurt RCM 82 is also very factory looking. I replaced a double DIN head unit with one of these. It’s nice to have the stock look and cubby back!
The early 2000s Protege radio is the same as the late model FDs sold in Japan, except the controls are correct for the US market. The Protege radio also has the amber back light. The downside is the harness connectors are not the same and requires an adapter. And yes, that is a working MiniDisc player.
Hear is what the Blaupunkt Frankfurt looks like. The illumination looks orange in the photo but is more red in person. The color is adjustable and matches the other dash parts nicely.
I felt the updated head units in the version 6 cars sort of clunked with the overall dash design, being of a different era.
You can also get earlier generation head units from Miata or Protege that are generation correct for our cars.
Here is my accumulation. Can you identify which head unit is from which car? (USDM Miata, CanadianDM Bose, JDM Bose, updated Protege,. several period correct aftermarket, FD option catalogue pop-up TV unit.)
I'd love to put the pop-up TV unit in my car, if I could figure a way to make it work. maybe a video feed?
In era, Mazda also has a fragrance head unit. I have not seen one come up for sale (yet).
Continental also makes some nice looking radios if you want to spent around $300. I've been debating between theirs or a blaupunkt version. If you get an older radio with the RCA(?) type outlets on the back, there are also bluetooth adapters you can install from china. https://www.continental-aftermarket....ainment/radios
