Perfect match

Dear Ze:

They seem to be exactly like the wheels I have that came directly off a local 95/96 Bathurst.

The Japanese does not seem to mention "bathurst" but says the wheels were converted to "Ganmeta" based on factory silver.

My guess that is a simple statement of fact that would apply to my wheels as well.

Looks like a good catch.

You may want to look into the services of Jesse Streeter. He will do the leg work in Japan for a very reasonable fee.

Also good old shipment by sea mail is still available from Japan at dramatically lower cost.

However you may forget you bought the item by the time the mail arrives (say three months) which is kind of a nice surprise.

Jessie can also arrange more typical air mail parcel service.

(I have received EMS packages from Japan within the same date. Which is also a pleasant surprise, because you would never expect so fast. )

Thanks! Will look into Jesse’s service. Now I need to see if they have 2 more wheels on there. I also saw a full set of silver Efini center caps, I think someone was asking about them in this thread or another thread.

Just leave a request with Jesse and he will do a hunt. Perhaps get items even before they get to auction.

I want to believe the same factory may have made an iteration or 2 to bring to the market. I had really cleaned mine up with agitation and a deep bath plus the pic was is direct sunlight for the appearance. Still vibrant in general. Some down stream heat cycling may have lend a hand in it as the spring clamp and ex piping section looks the same. Love it !

Silver to Gunmetal is how I read the katakana, so they appear to be painted stock wheels?

Yes. But likely done on purpose in the factory or on factory order. Proof would be if there is a actual part number for the Bathurst variant.

Free t-shirt for the person to find that. (Mailing extra).

BC Hard (to find) evidence

The likely parts manual to cover the bathurst wheels would be AJFA06.

The Verion 6 brochure ,which mainly covers the Spirit R, shows the Bathurst TX with it dark wheels proud. The Version 4 brochure shows two tones of the 16 "
Highpressure casting" wheels but makes no reference as to why. The Type RB Bathurst in the the brochure shows the SSM version with silver wheels. No mention of the second colour in the options pages.

Maybe the dark wheels where meant for people "in the know".

Thumbs up

Represented the stock look for Deals Gap Rotary Rally 2021👍
Definitely a bonus in ride comfort with the stock 16s on the 1800 mile trip.

I think the longer you own a car the more you appreciate its original form. The 16" OEM wheels look great with the early bumper, it all works well together and they are exceptionally light and strong. They are pressure cast, allowing them to use thinner aluminium as it's less prone to manufacturing defects, there are very few rims in 16x8 as light at these. I wonder if this process was quite expensive and the design revision was a cost saving action and reverting to the more traditional casting method, explaining why the wheels are thicker walled?

The only two bad wheels that were OEM are thankfully quite rare, the OEM 3 spoke and 10 spoke that were offered early on as an option (Japan only). They are pretty grim!

I love my OEM wheels, the first wheels I've had on a car where I don't even consider looking at other rims as a replacement, they just work with the car. They even look good covered in brake dust in this pic .

The thin wheels were prone to breaking. Drag racers seem to love them. I have bought and sold four sets. As for 16" I prefer the 99 ones (used up to 2002 on the Type RB). They are very light as well.

With help of Jesse Streeter , I completed my staggered set of Speedline MAG-R wheels that came on my first parts car. Really digging these at the moment.

Not on OEM wheels, though I had a set of the Spirit wheels some years ago and loved them.

As a longtime believer in the OEM design, like Ceylon, I appreciate the FD's lines more and more. I shaved the rear side markers and ground down a number of welds that were visible. Did the same kind of thing in the engine bay.

Some larger sized replica OEM wheels would be pretty awesome. Like 18x9 and 18x10.

There were a few examples of Mazdaspeed 18" wheels in the Mazdaspeed catalogues. Also Brian Long's book mentioned. Nice OEM upgrade if you can find.

I personally think they're too big, and their offsets play a real havoc to the original suspension scrub wise. However, if you want it for appearance purposes, there is no better wheel. Provided you can find them...

BC The Source for Sports

These tuner bibles out of Japan are a huge resource for spotting era correct mods and accessories. It is very interesting to see the evolution from magazine to magazine as the FD tuner scene went crazy.

I have (by accident) been accumulating bits of a few of the more famous body kits. (early Veilsidde, C-west)

Worth their wait in gold!

The gold with silver lip belong to certain colours. They’ll look fantastic in a darker coloured FD. You can kinda get away with it on the red.
I would still want them in the white though..

BC On side with in Priod

Cracked open one of the tuner bibles. Seems Recaro SR-II were considered an after-market alternative for FD. This makes me pleased, because I have stuffed a pair intp my car.
