I've searched and haven't found the solution I'm after. I'm looking for a cell phone holder for my FD that doesn't require any unnecessary drilling/cutting. I don't want to clip anything on the vents and the ones that plug into the cigarette lighter just flop over when I turn. Are there any quality options out there ? I know JP3 has one to the tune of $180 but before I dive into that I would like to ask the community to see if there is anything new on the matter. I'd love something similar to the Apexi FC Commander holder that Banzai offers but adapted for cell phones. Thanks all.
Below is a pic of the garbage one I have no that falls over almost immediately:
I saw this in the RX7 facebook group earlier and it looks pretty nice if you have the right sized double din. I just don't see the point if your radio has carplay or android auto, then you can just set your phone aside and have less clutter and just use the radio.

If you're using the phone via your head unit with either Android Auto or Apple Carplay, another option to try stashing the phone in the glove box. That approach has been working well for me on my '93FD - all of the Android Auto features of my phone including navigation work fine that way. My head unit is a 2020 vintage Kenwood 2DIN with wired Android Auto & Carplay support; phone is a 2022 vintage Motorola G-Power. I routed its USB cable into the glove box where I connect it to my phone. Keeps the phone charged, Android Auto works, and no worries about crappy phone mounts.
YMMV though, so test it out with your phone - phone function will depend a lot on your phone hardware - some phones are better than others at receiving GPS & cellular data from less than optimal locations. And perhaps the year of FD matters too - passenger airbag equipped FDs probably have more metal structure above the glove box which will tend to block GPS & cellular reception a bit more.
@boostin13b - that looks like what I'm after but I have the OEM head unit. I think I saw it posted on FB as well and he indicated you needed a specific cage to make it work (non-OEM).

Just saw that too, looks like he was using a Pioneer install kit or something. This looks like something that can be built a few different ways for people with 3d printing abilities. Looks like a good opportunity for somebody to scan the factory pocket and add the mount to it.
The way you describe your goals, I'd say there is really only 2 good options at this time: JP3 mount or to repurpose a PFC mount to hold a cell phone. [Side note: Drakes just recently came out with a mount for the driver's side door, but you obstruct the vent to utilize it. I don't think this is what your after, but may be worth a look just in case. [url]https://www.draklore.com/mazdarx7rx8/fd-drivers-door-vent]
The JP3 mount system is spendy....BUT also very versatile. It can be for a cell phone mount, a cup holder, or a laptop mount. So, it can be justifiable if some of those other options are also interesting to you. I personally find the lap top mount very useful, but once I get the car tuned, I probably won't be needing that much, so it'll be nice to be able to repurpose it for another usage in the future.
Or, depending on how handy you are, you may be able to repurpose a Banzai PFC mount, or a different PFC mount to accept a cell phone holder. If that were the case, I think I'd go with the Code Red Performance cigarette mount, and see if there would be a way to ditch the PFC portion and attach a cell phone mount to the bar that goes into the lighter. It would certainly be less floppy that the one you currently have, and be completely reversable in an instant. https://coderedperformance.com/produ...ommander-mount
I can make a cell phone holder the problem is the vast differences in phone dimensions and cases. Make one for the Max and a normal Iphone would be all over the place. I suppose I could just design one around the normal phone with a typical case and others just miss out.
Edit: I measured my iphone with the case added some wiggle room 3.25" wide x 6" tall x .60" deep. Sound about right?

I put a threaded insert into a cruise control blank on my dash, and thread a RAM ball into it. I can mount my cell phone with RAM holders, or my AIM Solo, or anything else that isn't super heavy. It would probably hold a small drink.
@REnaissance_Sle7in - thank you for the leads, I wasn't aware of Draklore or CodeRed but it looks like they have some neat stuff for our cars. I should have noted I don't want to attach a magnet to my phone, its already bulky enough without one and I live in the Southern California where previous ones have literally melted off (I know I know, picky).
@Banzai-Racing - I think your best (most universal) option would be to make something similar to the FC Commander holder but 1 inch ball mount compatible holder on the end, that way people can buy whatever holder they want and attach them together, like the following:
I'll probably end up going with the JP3 accessory mount attached to some Amazon garbage and see how that goes. I'll report back with my results.
Just ordered the SSL certificate, IT is taking care of the implementation now. Apparently, this is a Google thing over the past few years where every single page needs to be secure, not just checkout where the data is actually shared.

I bought a cheap suction cup mount off the jungle website, and it's worked fine for years. I mounted it just around the bottom-left part of the windshield (from inside the car), and it has stayed there just fine. Not the most visually pleasing, but stays there. Nowadays, they make the suction cup with sticky material on it and a cam latch that pulls the cup tight.
I bought a RAM mount, and it almost immediately broke when I tested my Pixel phone on it. I won't buy another one of those, and that's my defense of cheap suction cup phone mounts.
Really, like others have said, is to use a newer head unit with Android/Apple control compatibility.
