Inca,
It's got one of those small adjustment computers (FCON?).
As far as I can tell, that FD is/should be running a fully programmable system.
Popular one on the form is the Apexi PowerFC. The Haltech is another.
Without a computer that engine will blow in dew time.

ECU?
I would add a air/fuel meter and you can then be sure your not running lean - the ECU will not retard your ignition past 4000RPM based on the knock sensor, a PFC is a faster computer and can retard above 4000 and get rid of the 3000 RPM hesitation problem. The FCON can only control and richen up to a point when your injectors are running at 100%. I didn't see upgraded injectors in your list? IMHO

Hey,
Puma: I actually haven't purchased it yet, but I'm looking at it this weekend.
I have a bit more info from a few emails with the owner.
I asked: Hesitation at 3000 RPM?
Owners answer: Only when cold, and not at all when the FCON is activated. But that is not needed because I have a cat on the car. I virtually eliminated that hesitation by attaching a ground strap to the battery, so I think by cleaning the terminals again it will remedy it.
I know the ground would help to eliminate the hesitation, but the other stuff????
The mods look fairly complete (for reliability) with the exception of this and maybe vac. line replacements.
Ideally don't want to get into too many fix/replacements right off the back. So it's kind of this little bugger or a stock version of it that I'm choosing between
It's always going to be a tough choice I suppose.
Thanks guys.

Okay this car seems to be getting sketchier by the minute. I think I need to check up on the HKS cat.
Puma: I found it on thepartstrader.com, but he has just listed it on the autotrader.ca. It's the black one with the mod list. This unorthodox mod list worries me.
I'm not sure right now; it's either this one or the stock Montego blue one listed under the owner name Kerry - both on autotrader.ca

It looks to me like the Montego Blue is the one that you should be looking at. It looks like it's been really well maintained.
The others I looked at autotrader.ca don't look all that well. Maybe the red one but not the black one with a bit of mods done to it.
Have you seen the Blue one up close and personal?
It all depends on how the car looks like up close. Pictures can only do so much....

Hey Neo,
Thanks for the guidance man. I had an appointment a while ago, but it got cancelled and I've been holding off on rebooking to wait for my bank to answer me about financing. I should know today what the finance will be. They've been taking their sweet time about it!
I hope I can talk the guy down a bit, and then do a few mods with 2 or 3K before storing it for the winter.
Here's a pic of the engine from the black one. This was my first warning signal I think.
Oh I wanted to ask you if your first name is Chris? Do you work in Etobicoke? Not sure if I know you or not.

I honestly do not see anything wrong with the set up. The HKS FCON is a great fuel computer. Yes it is a piggy back but most Rx-7 Tuners in Japan have been using it for years. FEED, Top Fuel, and R Magic use it. With what is on the car the FCON should already have the base map for the boost and fuel. The FCD will allow for more than stock boost levels and the FCON will take care of the fuel curve. The car is mildly modded so i wouldn't worry too much.
The only problem is that here in the US there are no tuning shops that have the HKS Power Writer that will allow custom tuning.
The Apex'i Power FC right now dominates the US market but if you look at Japan it is still split between the Power FC and the new FCON-S.
HKS USA plans to start develping the FCON-S for US applications and to start allowing some of their dealer/tuning (HKS PRO-Dealers) shops access to the power writer software. But that is still a bit away. Once that happens the Power FC will have some serious competition. But untill that happens I'll still be using my Power FC.
