Lightbulb Is no intake best the most practical?

Sorry to bring up intakes again but based on what I've been reading here, it seems to me that the most practical intake solution is to simply buy some K&N air filters skip buying an "cold air intake system". I know people are generally happy with their intakes but is there actually any evidence that one intake is better than another or even just a stock system with some K&N filters? If not I think $300 is a lot to pay for a little shield that may not even do anything useful as in the Pettit system. gsxr1000 said he removed the Pettit shield with no noticeable performance loss. "All those other boxes (M2, PFS etc) suffer from a vaccumm at the supposed 'cold-air' entrance at high speed." - BCNU. Do you guys dissagree? I may be way off here.
Also, what is the part number for the small K&N air filter for the air seperation tank used by the Pettit system?

A couple of things:
1. Your intake temp is dependent of intake temp into the turbos. I tihnk of the temp as additive, hence the reason the car feels so much faster on cold night. Also the IC helps a BUNCH.
2. The PFS and M2 intakes are completely different. The PFS sources its air from the same duct as the IC. At low speeds and high load, it has been reported that air actually sucks backwards through the IC from the engine. The M2 gets cold air from besides the radiator. This area would not be a vacuum???
3. All this could be moot if you have a large enough IC to compensate for the hot air intake.
4. You can kill your airpump if running hot engine air into it. Several people have complained of this.

Hope this helps, The cheapest route is to modify your stock intake or create your own with K&N filters.

the pettit system looks like crap, but it works. It is not so much a heat shield as a duct. I am partial becaue I have it on my car, but I can tell you that with engine tempo close to 100C, I stop car, and the filters are cool to the touch comapred to the rest of my engien bay. I think just K&Ns woudl be a teriible setup, uggh all that hot air. even the stock setup is betetr than that. Or better yet just get a RB cold air inlet for 100$, that works well too. I am selling mine for 50$.

the pettit system does suck in colder air. it didn't make a huge difference in my intake temps but thats because i still have the stock intercooler. but after a hard run you can tell what the heat shield is doing just by sticking your hand on either side. engine side hot/intake side cold.

basically the duct unrestricts the opening to the stock box, and creates it's own independent air duct. Much less restrictive. ANd to be honest after looking at system like m2 and PFS, they offer probably little benefi over a RB inlet with K&N drop in.

I'm leaning toward the RB with K&N filters. It seems like a good value. Is anyone here using this setup right now? KZ1, why did you get the Pettit if you already had the RB? Did you try the RB before switching to the Pettit?

Just remember that going with this solution greatly resticts your IC upgrade path. This is the main reason people switch to aftermarket intakes. I believe only the GReddy IC will fit with both battery and stock intake thats worth a damn, unless you go front mount.

I switched because I put in a PFS intercooler. The pettit is great very little restriction, problem is it can become heat soaked, the metal shield/duct, mesh around k&Ns. Racing beat more strictive but much cooler air. I didn;t really notiuce a difference in power between the two. I am not saying that RB is the best, but close enough for under a hundred bucks new.
