Mine has a big pettit sticker right in the middle of it.

you send them your stock unit and they soder (sp?) in a new chip or chips that richen the A/F mixture. You can't do anything with the stock unit because it is now the pettit unit.
stock ship ---> pettit
pettit puts in new chips
now the stock ecu is considered a pettit ecu

Look up the page that shows what the stock looks like internally vs. the pettit. That will be your best bet because it is possible to order just the chips from pettit and install them yourself.
As far as the stickers go, they did it 2 years ago when I bought mine and I think it is a safe guard for them as well as anyone who sells it after the fact so I would assume they should have always done it.

Mazdamike: Let us know if he tried to screw you. You may actually want to put the ECU in your car for a test. Take it out and see if it performs differently. You can tell when you put in a new ECU from Pettit.
Snook: your ECU came from Texas. It was traded with someone who upgraded to the APEXi unit. It is a genuine Pettit ECU.

I had the right idea about the pettit ecu I just thought that it plugged in to the stock ecu instead of being soldered on as a different chip. I thought you could just buy the chip but I guess pettit solders it on for you.
Wow Joseph you know more about my car than I do.
btw remember that trailor hitch thing on my car?
Do you think it's okay for me to tow our flats boat with that? I'm not sure of the weight of it I think it's 1000 some pounds and almost 20 feet. I doubt we are supposed to tow stuff but....God how sweet would that be!!

Its more than just a chip...its actually two chips and a daughter board that plugs where the stock micro-p goes, and has two sockets on it, one for the micro-p that you desoldered, and one for an additional EPROM. You can't just take a stocker and do this yourself unless you happen to have the daughterboard.
