Holy Moley! What just happened to my engine??
Usually my car starts without any problems, I put the clutch in and put it in first gear and start it up. It usually jumps to about 2K and idles fine. Today it stuttered a bit raced up to 2700, stumbled and BANG! It backfired like a shotgun! MY CAR HAS NEVER DONE THAT!
What the hell do you suppose could have created that backfire?
After that horrible bang I started it up again and drove it and everything seemed ok. Can these cars backfire without engine damage? Or am I screwed?

Blow up or win
Cat napping in intake? (sorry - I just can't help myself sometimes)
Damn, that's really strange. HMMmmmm....Jeez, that's a tough one, I've never had that happen to mine. If it does it again I would shut it off and have Jay look at it. Every time I've ever talked to anyone about random backfiring they always say "Oh, it was probably just a piece of dirt in the injector or something simple that will probably go away." Don't ignore it. With all the mods you have it make take some exploration, but I would certainly start with the electrical - pull the plugs and look at em'- it sometimes is like reading tea leaves, but it may just give you some insight into what's goin' on.

**** that, mine backfires all the time. If i let it do the AWS, when it's done it'll backfire down to normal RPMS. Sometimes it just backfires for the hell of it! But i'm running full exhaust and really rich.....

Isn't that indicative of running rich?? Maybe just too much fuel at that moment. Mine has popped off like that about 3-4x's this year. Everything is fine.

A backfire indicates incomplete combustion. It's combustion which takes place outside the engine. The damage is most likely to occur to the exhaust system. I have seen mufflers (not in RX-7's) blown open by backfires.
The cause is most often due to the engine running rich, bad spark
plugs, or something like that.

Thanks for the reassurance fellow boostards.....I don't like when my car goes boom, with my M2 dual tip I doubt that there was damage. Alhough this exhaust has been getting louder with use, I'm not sure why. M2 says it will, but offered no explanation as to why it would. Oh well...

About a month and a half ago... mine was doing that... I was driving on the highway with no problems... I got off and was stopped at a red light. When I went to drive, the car sputtered at 2700 rpm... I changed gears.... same ****. I have the car towed home and it sits for a day till I can look at it. I check the plugs... nada... I check the wires... nada. I waited till night time so I could see if the plug wires were possibly arcing (sp) I start it up and BANG 3 FOOT FLAME.... and the car was cold as Ice.... turns out that my secondary injectors were bad. I replaced them and now no problem... The car gave me a code that I had Mazda check and it was for the injectors... maybe this will help you.
