5th Gear Syncro
I know that my fifth gear syncro is not in good shape. It grinds sometimes going into fifth. But, I was wondering where or who can tell me what it is that goes bad and where to get the parts.
Please Help. I am going to do the rebuild my self. I have a friend who rebuilds automatics and manuals at a GM dealership.

I have a bad 5th gear synchro also and it is going to be fix by Dave at KDR. From what I know it is only the sychro that is bad and the parts is real cheap. It is like a ring with teeth around it, and I saw one that is breaking in two parts. You should be able to get it from a reputable Mazda that sells oem parts. Now if you doing the labor yourself it is cheap compare to have someone do and charge you labor. For me I have to pay for the parts and labor total comes out to about $479.

Leaking gasket.
My extension housing is leaking tranny fluid very slowly due to the fact that Mazda had replaced the syncro on my car before I owned it and did a lousy job. Is there enough clearence to lower the tranny, still attached to the engine, and remove the extension housing and replace its gasket?

If you going to change the 5° gear synchro, change the shift select spindle is very easy once the gearbox is down.
take a look in www.scuderiaciriani.com.
the spindle is about $40 or $45 and the synchro is around $25.
i have the upgraded shift select spindle, there is a big diference when you change gears.
good look.
