Is your exhaust too loud? Try this

a Borla XR-1 oval. a few of you who have been within the 2 miles radius on my car above 3k rpms ear drums can rest easy. I bought a XR-1 from summit for $108 and added it to my 3 inch turbo back. Right after we welded it up I noticed the sound change from a "Japanese" car sound to more of a Ferrari deep rumble. It no longer has a high pitched rev. Fittiment under the car was great. I did however notice that I have plenty of room for a 4 inch exhaust system. Here's a few pics from the cell phone. sorry we forgot the video camera so I have no before and after sound clips.

In all exhaust systems, the pre-silencer sets the tone, the mufflers set the loud.

My cat guts disappeared (by magic) 2 years ago, the big-ole stock mufflers still keep it quiet.

Good call.

I highly recommend the Borla XR-1. I've used them on a couple cars and have been happy with it every time.

What exactly is a presilencer? is that like a muffler? I've heard of glass packs... lol.

Basically all I know about exhaust is how to make them flow, not make them quiet. But, Im quickly finding out I need to learn more about the latter... hah.

dont mean to hijack this thread but, im thinking about getting this to quiet down my Rb head/silencer to single muffler.... should i use this as a muffler or try and fit it inbetween my presilencer and muffler if possible?

Before my coolant seals blew, and I decided a rebuild w/ streetport was in order (hence headers, corksport, xr-1's) I was trying to figure out which size XR-1 (shorty or normal) 3" oval I could fit 2 of on a rx7.com racepipe. Now I'm gonna try to run one right after the header, and one wherever else I can fit one (be it shorty or normal) before the muffler on the CS.

A presilencer is a muffler type device installed before the main mufflers. They're usually of a straight through "glasspack" design, but don't use a traditional glasspack with fiberglass or such - the higher rotary exhaust temperatures will melt the packing material in very short order. Rotary presilencers are of a heavier construction with steel wool packing that can take the temperatures.

They're generally installed in place of catalytic converters.

Ok let me get this straight, you installed the borla between the header and the y pipe.

My mufflers look exactly like that, btu theyre round cans. MY car is way too loud, if I had a custom exhaust made with those back after my cat, and some chambered mufflers too, how would it be?

do you guys think this would quieten down the exhaust more so than the Bonez high-flo cat (the one that goes between RB header and y-pipe)?

i was thinking about the Bonez for making the exhaust quieter, because then i could be semi-environmentally friendly also, lol...

So the Borla XR-1 is still straight through? I think it would still be pretty loud wouldn't it?

you are saying that a muffler, such as this Borla one, placed in the stated position, will:

1) flow more
2) reduce sound output more

than a high quality high-flow cat? that is all i am asking.

High flow cat will probably reduce sound more, but I doubt it'd flow more.

A true Cat, even a high flow, will quieten the sound more then a presilencer will. A Cat is designed to change the chemicals in the exhaust and must intercept the exhaust to do so.

A presilencer is not a cat and will be much louder, but will flow better.

yeah, i just don't think a presilencer will be quiet enough though...maybe a better question is what is the performance difference between, let's say a muffler like the Borla here, and something like the Bonez high-flow cat?
if it is neglible, i'd rather take the cat since it would be quieter and make the air around my car breathable, lol.
