I am just finishing the installation of mine. FWIW, they are bit more more trouble then would be implied by most of what you might read!

Another problem is the needles on our cars are white, so against the white gauges they are a little tough to see, at night this is even more of a problem, they virtually dissapear

I have some pictures of the gauges front lit with blue light and another with the regular dash bulbs, give some time to get them posted...

Firstly the eye can pick up details in the dark that a regular camera can not, but for any of you who have not seen the indiglo gauges these photos should give you a reasonable expectation of what to expect. They are quite bright at night when set to full intensity, you almost need sunglasses!

These gauges come with a dimmer and a switch that can change the colour slightly from blue to a blue-green colour. I am not aware or haven’t yet seen an indiglo dash that has only red markings.

Because of all of the discussion in the past about problems associated with painting the needles I decided to try a different approach. I found some permanent markers at Staples and found that a combination of orange and fuscia resulted in a brilliant red that matched the markings on the gauges I have. I did look for a fluorescent marker, but the only colour that I could find was yellow, and I didn’t want yellow needles on my dash (personal preference).

Another question was about those white circles found on some of the gauges available for sale. To get an idea how the needles look without the white circle just look at the voltmeter and temp gauges, the needles are there but they definitely don't jump out at you, in fact if it weren't for the light from the dash bulbs they end up almost hidden, just look at the fuel gauge and the oil pressure gauge. On those you really can't see the needle at all!

The first 3 pictures show the process that I used to “colour” the needles, I felt that the ink from the markers wouldn’t add any significant weight to the needles. The pens that I used can be seen in each picture.





The next 3 pictures show what the gauges look like installed, without the clear cover, with the cover and finally a close up of the tach. Notice the wire exit the top in my case. I had to cut channels in the rear part of the case to prevent the wires from being pinched. One set of the wires even interferes with the latching clip; I had to cut 1/3 of the clip off in this case, still leaving enough of it to do its job.





The final 4 pictures show the dash at night, with the stock bulbs, blue LED’s and close ups of the large gauges and the small gauges with blue LED’s.








To power the gauges, I tapped into a lead that comes from the headlight switch, more specifically the wire that goes to trigger all of the lights that illuminate the dash, clock, logicon etc. In the case of a 1991 N/A it is in the E11 cluster switch and is red with a black tracer (R/B). The current required for the indiglo dash is less the 500mA so this should not present a problem. Be careful where you place the black control box that come with these gauges, they emit an audio frequency EMI field that can be picked up by an audio system and present itself as a whistle in the speakers. The first place I tried was right behind a 3-way crossover, kind of distracting!

I think that they look good, they may have looked even better if available in red, glowing needles would be nice, but in the end you work with what is available and go from there.

i did the same with the white gauges, but i used a flosforent orange paint for the needles, they look nice after light hits them, but it is a pain in the *** at night sometimes cause i cant see them lol. it doesnt have the shift up or the high beem lights it seems on yours, other than that, it looks hot. great job there man

Wow... that looks suprisingly good actually.

What I'd really like to find though are black face guages where the numbers light up brightly, thus the stocker needly wouldn't be impossible to see...

corksport has them but be prepared to spend a lot more then ebay. I would keep an eye out as they pop up from time to time, seems to be mostly S4 NA with the occasional turbo and S5.

Just be careful when you install them. Make sure you don't tighten the little screws too far or it will distort the plastic. also, on mine the center hole on the speedo rubbed on the needle hub and would stick in one place until the car got completely cold. I had to take the dash apart again and sand the hole a little bigger. It was cool though, for a while I had the worlds fastest RX7. 105mph in neutral with the engine shut off! Top that anyone!!

I used Liquitex acrylic artist paint, flourescent orange (I had it already). It looks really slick days, and is pretty good at night if you get the right balance between the original dash lights and the intensity of the glow. The green is a little better IMHO.

Oh I almost forgot, I was thinking that if you could replace the original dash bulb with a blacklight, the flourescent paint might jump out really well, and the purplish glow from that wouldn't really affect the glow of the backdrop. But the bulb would have to be one of those weird screw in kinds. Does anyone know of a source for this?

Somewhere in my travels I have seen black light bulbs in a 194 style, so they do exist. The other option for this would be a little trickier. I have seen 4" flourescent neon tubes at Walmart for $9.99 they had blue,green and red. Again I thought I saw ultraviolet one's during my last trip to the US at Best Buy.

I actually have a set of ultraviolet cold cathode tubes that run of off 12v that I picked up from Fry's Electronics the last time I was in San Diego. They are for modding computor cases. These would do the trick, only problem is that they are 10-12" long, tough to fit into the dash cluster under the gauges!

How about the flexible light string running around the inside of the cluster or is this getting a little ricey?

I was thinking of some type of flourescent material to add to the needles on my dash, does anybody know what colours are available?

I am pretty sure there are 4" cold cathods that run in computers and if I am not mistaken run off the computer power supply at 12V dc.that may work and the inverters are small so they may fit in a tight spot...speaking of which has any used these off of ebay...I need a set for a 89-90 turbo II with a white face/green background to match the greddy gauges.

I thought about this too, but the reason most of the indiglo gauges sold are either white or silver faced is to be visible during the day.
If you look at them during the day the segments that light up are darker then the face making them visible, if the back ground were dark as well... wouldn't work.

What they need for your idea is a black background with orange or white number seagments that glow red or blue at night, with the flip of a switch of course!

I'd change mine out for that!

You can pick up 4, 6, or 12" CC tubes that case modders like myself use in their pc's.
Blue, red, orange, yellow, green, purple, and UV.

Yes they run off 12v constant- im not sure how they would react to a 14.5+ system. However I have seen them used in cars before.

Im not by any means a ricer-
But I do have my cabin and subs illuminated by a handful of carefully placed leds.

I may be very close to just that. I found a set of flourescent highliters at the stationary store, turns out that not all of the pens in the package used flourescent ink only the fuscia, orange and yellow, the blue and green didn't glow at all. I also found a bottle of luminescent (glow) paint at a craft store that is designed to be used as a top coat.

A local auto parts store had a 8" neon black light on sale, made sure that I could return it if this doesn't work out...it should fit easily within the cluster where the clear plastic 'light pipe' is.

Last night I fired up the black light and tested the markers and paint. The flourescent markers really came alive, but the luminescent paint stole the light show! not only was it bright but of course it continued to glow after the light was removed.

So it is now just a decision/test to see which would be the best to top coat the already red needles. I am still concerned about the added weight of the paint as compared to the markers and if the glow paint may be a little too bright.
