you guys with heatshields I need some advice!!

I have come up with 2 designs and have made a near complete set of each design.

I need some pics of any that you guys have made or bought and your opinions of them so that I can figure out which way is going to be the best design out of my 2.

I originally made one of my designs based on my configuration but am now not sure if they should all be made like my the one I am going to use to allow for enough air to get to cone but not hot air.

if I had a GTECH or a dyno it would be easy to figure out but I am not working now so I dont have money to blow.

take a look at these pics and give me an opinion.

thanks

i can see what your trying to do by cutting out the section in the first pic but really i think thats going to kill the whole idea because it wont be keeping the engine bay air out of the intake. i would suggest putting like a raised section or a scoop over the filter so that the air from the headlight will flow well into it and still block the hot air. i do not have a heat sheild, im just telling you what i would suggest by looking at it.

well i think he was trying to get some use out of the headlight vent, if thats the case just channeling the air a little better would probly give you much cooler air

just use that vent to let cool air into the engine bay then... more airflow through there never hurts anything

Heres mine. Its kinda ghetto, but it cost about $3, and "theoretically" it keep engine bay air out of the intake. I have since removed the "heat sheild".

hey guys thanks for the opinions.

CWSTTU- I have had a setup like yours and I nearly got stranded when driving thru a major downpour about 400 miles away from home on interstate. Nearly stalled out and died cause the filter was soaked. I am not ready to do that just yet/

Yes, the idea for the hole is so that the air from the light might be able to reach filter. ducting is a good idea. just need to figure out how.

this is basically for those whom have the filter under hood and nothing stopping the hot air. something is better than nothing.

keep the suggestions coming.

well I think bigdv519 has it figured out, the way it looks isn't much but it could if you had the time and money too. I think if he had that headlight cover it would be the best. I might have to do that..

how could your car have stalled out and almost died? im curious because ive driven in some really heavy stuff here and many others i know with this setup have no problems..... did you go into standing water? and more importantly what filter were you using? im not saying your lying so dont get me wrong....... but what conclusion did you come to, to blame the intake design? whatever you do good luck

the filter will get so soaked that it wont let any air through, has happened to my friend 240sx, just had to disconnect a portion of his CAI and move the filter into the engine bay

CWSTTU- I have asked you before long time ago for help and you were a nice guy so I will be nice. I actually remember now looking at your set up and then doing mine likewise. I pulled out the brake duct and bottle and stuck the filter down there like you did

Now I said I was driving down interstate and it was raining very hard. I couldnt do over 30mph at the time because I couldnt see. I finally had to pull over because I couldnt see and when I did the car tried very hard to die. I mamaged to keep foot in the gas and it didnt die. then I putted up the interstate to the first gas station and checked the filter and it was saturated. after sitting 30 minutes I got back on the road and didnt get anymore rain.

so I am not lying and I dont know why you think it is such an outrageous possibility. maybe you have never had that problem or know anyone who has but that doesnt make it impossible. I mean come on. when it rains do you check your to see if it has any moisture?

anyhow enough of that. I no longer even have that 7.

I bought a Gtech in order to try to get some numbers to see what the ffects if any are for the different sets and also stock and modified stock airbox too,

thanks all

Mike

haha well thanks for being nice... i wasnt thinking it was outrageous at all... i merely wanted to know so that maybe i can brainstorm a fix for guys like you that have to drive in much more hazardous conditions than i do or some others do... so the filter gets so wet the water drops block the filter properties... i checked mine a few times and it was fine but again it might not have been so severe of a downpour as what others will experience...... ill have to ponder that a bit, sorry that the design didnt work out for you. guess its nice being in texas sometimes cause it doesnt rain or snow much here... good luck with your new setup and if i think of something to prevent this in the future i will be sure to post it or suggest it somewhere.. .have a good day

Cold Air Box using OEM Air Intake

That is an interesting ideal for sealing the CAI and finding a way to duct cold air in. I have a question, could you use the cold air intake for the OEM airbox and simply tie it into the cold air box built around the new filter?

Based on the engineering requirements an air intake should be at the point of the least disturbed and slowest moving air, this is where the hightest air pressure is and therefore the most efficient place for an air intake. As it turns out the location of the OEM air intake is the best location available.

Has anyone tried to duct air from this OEM duct into an after market cold air box?

Yes that's possible, I've seen pics here and there like that. I just didn't want to divert any air from the front of the radiator...same reason as why I didn't want to relocate the filter in front of the radiator.

..which is kind of a dumb reason looking back, since I don't even have my radiator panels on, but it seemed right at the time.
