Yo, forget 16" & 17" rims, 15" are Da BOMB!

Yo,

I just picked up some hella old school Ronal 5 spoke 15's for my GTUs, silver painted with polished lip. I got 'em with Yokohama A008R competition tires on 'em. 205/60-15. They're hella old, but they have tons of tread left.

First impression:

Holy sh*t!! The turn in is CRAZY. I mean, I almost crashed the mug 'cause it was like a slot car. Just turn the wheel a little, and the car acted like a lightcyle from Tron! Jink!

Same with the grip, I haven't got to hit any major constant radius corners, but I juked the thing back and forth and it was gripping! I hit an empty parking lot and it's leaving blackmarks, so /something/ is rubbing off those tires.

My car looks good too, I love the Old School 80's moon patrol looking tires and rims. I'm totally stoked on 'em!

Oh, I bought the rims for Auto X, I thought I was gonna have to replace the tires but they're good so far!

Uh, be careful with old tires.&nbsp Dry rot tires are notoriosly nasty for being unpredictable under load!&nbsp We really don't need to be crashing another GTUs!

is it the tires that are that good? how would 15's be better than the T2 rims you've got if they have the same 205 width?

Yo,

Hmm, okay, I'll try and take it easy. No midnight high speed runs just yet. How do you check for dry rot? The tires look good, no cracks in the sidewall, no weird coatings, I could even still see the old heat cycling on the sides. The tires were stored in a little metal shed for...I don't even know how many years. When did they stop making A008R's?

Thanks for the warning!

Yo,

Erik, these are A008R's vs. AVS Intermediates. AVS's are no slouches, but the A008R was a straight up DOT competition tire. Basically is has a wear rating of 50, and hardly ANY tread on the outside treadblock. They're sweet so far!

Try 205/50/15. Your car will accelerate like a T2. When I had my BFG R1 (worn) on hte track with those tires. I could not stop spinning the tires exiting the turns..... in 2nd gear too. I was driving sideways

Oh yeah reason why you dont want 15 inch tires. LOWERING SPRINGS. Man you wont believe how gay my car is with the stock tires. Car is lowered, yet the rim is tiny

Yo,

Yeah, I've been looking at replacement competition tires, looks like 205/50-15 is the main size.

I love the Ronal R9 on the RX-7, one of the best looking wheels.

Did you get the 35mm offset or the 30mm offset?

I have got 3 of the 16x7 R9 wheels. As soon as I find a 4th one then they are on my T2'vert.

I agree! 15's = lighter weight, better gear ratios. Can't beat 'em. I used a 10 year old beat to hell yoko A008R's this past auto-x season on my Integra, man they grip like mad, fun as hell! Be careful, chunks of rubber started coming off towards the end of the season, and finally the cords came through. I wouldn't reccommend using them on the street (no matter how fun it may be) just because what Ted said....and my experience, in the middle of the run I'd loose a huge "chunk" of the tread....but autox is safe b/c your going under 60 for the most part.

Pics!!

Yo,

I'll see if I can borrow a digital camera, I'd love to take pics of it. Also, when I re-do in the interior, I wanna take pics as well.

It's pretty cool looking!

Dot-R tires = Instant Superhero The single best thing you can do for cornering ability, period!

I wouldn't think they'd be dry rotted... if they were dried out, they wouldn't be sticking, they'd just slide across the road. At any rate they'll be worn out soon enough and you'll need new stickies... MMM Hoosier AS303... Kumho V700...

Yo,

Ha, sorry, Northern California Bay Area slang...

hella adj 1. very, really, extremely. Origin: northern California, USA. ("That car was hella cool!") 2. a lot. ("She uses hella drugs.") Submitted by Inkberry Radish, California, USA, 06-10-97.

From the online slang dictionary. *grin*

My car is hella cool!
