Question yet another 88-91 automatic seatbelts question

ok, so I've been looking around and yes i am aware that i can just print up the page in my signature and bring it into a dealership to get this issue fixed.

My question is, Has anyone actually torn one apart to see why they break? Has anyone attempted to fix the issue?

Because if not, I might be tempted to do a how to thread full of pictures, but im not very mechanically incline, and i usually do a lot more breaking than most people.

I've had two S5's and both had functional auto belts (at least the driver side) and removed them from both cars.
Regardless whether they actually work, fact is they simply don't fit very well...the lap belt in particular always rode more on my thighs (svelte and muscular as they are) and I never felt safely cinched in.
So no, I've never explored fixing them because I think they suck.

i've never torn one apart, but usually on bad ones you can see the cable hanging out, so there is some problem with the cable/track assembly.

since the track is an extrusion, there is no real dissassembly.

i do agree with clokker though, i hate the S5 belts, they don't fit, and they seem to always try and strangle me, like rob lowe in tommy boy...

i dont like automatic seat belts much either, and ya whoever thought of putting the lap belt lock there was pretty idiotic, but i'm ocd about all my things working, regardless of liking them or not, im not sure why mine aren't working, i think the previous owner just unplugged em or something, because my tracks look fine and there's no hanging cables.

i would have looked at them by now but my brother took all my tools when i moved away and my moms tool set is completely random and disorganized and missing a lot of parts

i just don't want to drop my car off at a dealership and have to wait a few days to get it back... even though it sits in my drive way for days on end...

If you think they're just unplugged, removing the lower b-pillar plastic exposes the motor and it's connection.
The control box is located in the dash, behind the glovebox...it could be unplugged as well.

Should you decide to go to the dealer, I'd recommend you remove the a-pillar trim yourself.
You'll probably break it but maybe not as badly as they will.
It's a near certainty it'll break though.

I had the passenger side repaired in one of my FCs. Dealership ordered the parts, took about a week to come in. Gave me a call when they did, I made an appointment to have the work done, and it only took about two hours.

I'm not sure you think the car will just sit at the dealership for days....

i donno.. im always uneasy when i let someone borrow my car or i leave it somewhere... even my 76 volvo 244dl... i bought it for $150 and specifically to beat it and i didn't want to leave it on the side of the freeway when i blew the motor, i had that car for 3 days and i still miss it.. my custom green and blue checkerboard with red stripes i painted on it.. the uneasy feeling when i wasn't sure if i was in 1st or reverse because of the loose bushings... and when i first bought it, i wasnt sure if it was diesel or gas because the motor looked like a diesel and was confirmed by 4 other people who knew diesels, but the sticker said unleaded only... good times

Given your separation anxiety issues, seems like you have only a few options-

Take some Xanax and allow strangers to fix the car.

Find a used mousetrack and replace it yourself (time consuming but mechanically simple).

Convert to manual belts and avoid the issue entirely in the future.

There are other, less desirable, paths you could take- don't wear seatbelts or install a roll cage and 4-point harnesses but they are more extreme in consequence (fiery death! or non-compliance tickets) or execution (cages are tricky and harnesses a pain).
