wtf happened?
ok so im coming home from the skatepark, and i stop at 711 for a slurpee. i come out, try to start it, nothing, absolutely nothing. didnt even try to turn over. the battery was fine. i called some friends and neither of them had any idea either. we sat around for a while waiting for a towtruck my mom called, and i tried starting it again, and it started right up. perhaps something electrical overheated?
yah that or your starter is on its way out, mike (EAGE8 on the forum) has the same exact problem he can put the key in and it will crank and crank and crank, but wont turn over until he tries a second time. We've narrowed it down just to the starter being worn out.

I doubt it was flooding seeing how its an S4. I really think your problem is electrical unless this is something that happens every now and then... judging for the treads title I'd say this is your first time
It could also be a loose connection on the neutral safety switch to the transmission. This almost sounds like what happens if you try to start the car without the clutch in. Usually the starter will at least click or something if it's going bad.

this is a dumb question, but wheres the starter located? i feel like such a n00b
I highly doubt it's the neutral switch.
Here is what I am going to say.
Almost positive it will be one of these.
Loose battery connection. it's corroded now and not connecting enough to the post.
This has happened to me and left me stumped for hours.
Or
The starter solenoid is going bad.
Just get a new starter.
Or
Your clutch switch is failing.

if you are having problems starting the car--
*turn the key*
if it makes no clicking sound but a good voltage reading, then you more than likely have a faulty starter
proceed to hit the starter with a hammer or the back of a screwdriver
this should get it to start if you're having problems-- best bet is to just replace it because it's on it's way out

Did the lights inside the car (idiot lights and such) die at the same time? If so, its probably a bad battery terminal/connection.
IF not, it's farther down the line...bad starter solenoid, starter motor, or clutch switch. None of which are very expensive.
