It Is When A Chunk Of Carbon Inside Your Engine Comes Loose And Causes An Apex Seal To Break. Apex Seal Break=bye Bye Compression.

carbon lock is a condition where a carbon deposite has freed itself from the rotor and has jammed between the apex seal and the side housing causing the engine to not turn over. The only good way to fix this problem is by performing the atf treatment. The atf treatment is considered by many to be a last ditch effort to keep an engine running. This process is where ATF is put into the spark plug holes and is allowed to sit and soak and break down the carbon deposite. The downside is that it eats most of the rubber seals in our engines, hence the last ditch effort opinion.

how does ATF eat rubber? isn't it used in automatic transmissions with rubber oil seals?

Just don't drive like an old lady and you won't have to worry about carbon lock. 8k rpm a day blows the carbon out.

aaron cake has a good writeup on the effects of atf trick...

yes it is bad for your engine, but if you're clearing carbon lock with it, it's on its deathbed anyway.
