Write up on cleaning window tracks ?

My new Verts windows rolled up slowly when I got them now only the passanger window works. This was Friday. I have spare time and wouldn't mind cleaning them.

Maybe not dirty tracks...

It's possible that dirty tracks are your problem, but I suspect dirty switch contacts and ground connectors are more likely. Check out Aaron Cake's excellent write-up on grounding problems.

http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/grounding.htm

He mentions the grounding connector underneath the trailing coils. Turns out that the ground wire for the power window circuit runs through that connector. The main ground connector near the frame on the left front shock tower is also vital.

That leaves the switch contacts. It's not too difficult to remove and disassemble the switches and clean up the contacts.

As a diagnostic test, you could also try by-passing the switches & running a fused 12 v wire and a ground wire right to each motor.

Good luck.

Whoa!

Don't reinvent the wheel with some 'grounding theory'.

Clean your switches/repair if necessary.

Take off your door panels and do the following:

Clean and lube the tracks.
Lube the upper slides in both regulator cables with white lithium grease.
If the upper slides are already broken, repair with a pulley before the cable breaks.
Consider doing the relay mod on the switches.

Do all of this and your windows will be trouble free pretty much forever.

And using a sturdy plastic pry bar would work very well for prying the clips off that hold the rest of the panel in. I believe there are around nine screws - four in the arm rest, one behind the door handle, and four more around the perimeter.

Check out this thread:

This great write up was one of the hits from Google using "window switch cleaning site:rx7club.com" as the search string.

Also, Jack is right about my earlier post.

Burned switch contacts are the obvious place to start when a window does not work at all. Sounds like he also has experienced that lube and mechanical problems can cause slow windows. I learned sorta by accident that voltage drop across multiple oxidized ground points can have the same effect.

Good luck.
