well, after a few days of doing various projects I drove my car home today. I had started with replacing my brake master cylinder cause it was leaking and then i decided i might as well do the pads all around while I'm at it.

Well, around a week ago I also ordered a fd alternator from forum member silverroter. It arrived friday in a nicley packaged box. It had a double pulley already on, as per ordered and a clip for the wires. Worked great, no problems with install, only thing was i had to get smaller beltts as the pulley is a little smaller than the rotary performance pulley i had on before. so after i get the wrong size belt twice, I finally get it right and get it on.

Since the car was getting work on it I needed oil cooler lines so I did them now as well. I went to a local hydraulic shop,Westcan hydraulics for fell peggers, and gad a set of pretty stainless steel teflon hoses with all the approprate -an fittings. wow they look good. put those bad boys in and wow they look even cooler in the car. only had a little grinding of some sheet metal to make a bend by the rad cradle. and well, i felt like spending cash, went and got a new set of spark plugs.

So basically I got a pretty good overhaul of some important items on my ride. I drove it home today and it was great, with my wipers on, defrost on, and e-fan on and at idle it was still over 13 volts. at cruising speed it was close to 15 volts. i love it, it used to be like 10 at idle with no accesories on, shitty s4 alternators.

hats off to silverotor for the fd alternator, i would strongly recommend him for others looking to upgrade alternator.

now i can concentrate on my new 87 gx and making the single exhaust system. sorry for the long thread just crazy excited about the work i got done. O fcourse I will post some pics, but it is raing right now so i will wait for a bit.

I think i will do this as well, my '87 SE is only pulling 11-12volts and I have an extra FD alternator lying around just getting dusty. More volts = more better t3h fun

Silverrotor, what else is needed to make this work? from what I understand, I just need a different pulley and simply splice some wires?

my rebuilt S5 alt has been modded to crank out 130 amps, but at idle i still get only 12.4 with everything on. WTF. i think this guy did a crap job. why can't i get like 14.1 at idle with all my accesories on. NO i don't have a sub or any amps.

15 volts is pretty high.

Fastrotaries: take it to autozone or whatever and have it tested. volts as long as its above 12 mean dick all pretty much. Like Sonicrat said, amps = more important.

Seeing how you have a s4, you will need a Harness Clip from a s5/s6. From there, a simple 2 wire cut, solder and wrap.

The FD Alternator shaft protrusion is .990", thefore you will need a custom Pulley.

I havent seen the clip on the fd alt, but if its like the s4 from what I remember a few inchs of wire and some spade female/male connectors would get it to use the stock s4 harness.

because your 130amp alt will put out less power at idle then a stock one... but more at higher RPM.

How close to 15V? FD alternators have a higher output (i.e, amps) than FC ones, not higher voltage. 14.0-14.5V is what you should expect. Over 15V becomes a risk to your electronics. Keep an eye on it...

well, I know that amps are important, but i have no measuring tool of amperage, just volts, so I am letting pople know about what i can measure. All I know is the electrical system is very happy now. mor ethan enough amps for all accesories to run.

nz- it isn't over 15 volts, just really high 14 probably. will probably go down with a stereo in,

one of the best additions to my car so far. ignition system even sounds better


p.s. does anyone have a race pipe for sale cheap. just from manifold to where it would Y.

Just for a bit of clarification, amperage is the measure of current, which is the actual movement of electrons. Current is what charges batteries and kills electronics. I would test it to make sure the voltage regulator is good since 15A sounds a little high. you might start overcharging your battery.

The FD Alternators are tested and on avg, pump out b'n 130-136 amps right before shipping. I've been running my FD setup for over a year now and notice no over surge that may Indicate a smoked or failing system.

I'm running many electronics In my FC and noticed the Voltage Regulator and associated Is doing their job quite well. Infact, I've even added a 8 gauge wire directly from the Alternator to the Battery. I've noticed a 1.5v Increase from doing this. I also have a 1000cc Interstate Battery.

Oh, wpgrexx, I have a custom s.s Bruleen Exhaust I added to my FC. But with the addition of a RB Header, I've since yanked It out. It Is a direct bolt on from Manifold to the rest of the exhaust. The rear end of the pipe may vary on your setup. (Mine hooked up to my former Main Cat). But nothing that a sizing and a flange won't correct. Let me know.

Still, that's a bit higher than normal. As long as it stays in the 14's, you'll be fine.

holy, you guys are pretty nervous about my voltage. trust me, it works fine, the car even runs better, like before it wasn't getting enough power to the ignition.

silver, i was looking for a pipe to replace all the cats, and i think i will put in a nipple so i can run the aux ports as well. It will be the wifes car so it can't be too crazy, just want to get rid of the clogged cats.thanks though
