Hi folks,

I'm just curious... I have a 89 TII with approx 70k miles. This is my daily driver and I put a lot of miles on her, sometimes even driving her across the country 2000+ miles. Do you guys think I'm crazy? So far I've never had a problem. Are there any other owners who take such risks with their TII?

I DD mine, in the two months I had it running well, I put 5000km's on it (1 owner winter stored and babied). the OO probably wouldn't have put that on it in the year he had it out of storage. If you don't have any mods, you should be good. I blew a side seal somehow.

 

why wouldnt it make it? if it runs great any car can do that

 

Well it's a 21 year old car... and it's a TII which are not supposed to be the most reliable cars in the world. But I've never had a breakdown with mine (knock on wood)... and I'm waiting for factory 13B-TII engine to die so that I can get it rebuilt as a street-ported engine. But that might take a while... I'm not burning any oil or coolant and the engine still feels very strong.

 

i would drive my car across country. it may not look that great, but it's mechanically sound.

 

I've done LA to NYC before.....averaged 24 mpg with AC at 80 mph, so it was ok.

 

The 21 year old thing applies to all that rubber and plastic stuff-Radiator hoses, belts, vacuum lines, brake lines, hydraulic seals (brake and clutch cylinders). Some of those items are car-killers some are man-killers

THAT is the stuff that can take down your car. Doing the maintenance on an old car really means changing out all that rubber stuff in addition to the fluids.

If your car maintenance is up to date, including the above items, you should be fine.

 

I'd do it to mine, it would probably even make it. Its a car, it was designed to carry you from A to B. Assuming its in good mechanical shape, I don't see the problem.

 

it is 50/50 you never can just keep driving and not have something go wrong at some point it will happen just do your homework give your self the time you will need so you do not have to push it,++ bring your AAA card and your bank book

 

i thought about driving mine accross state etc.. As long as you keep your temps good and aint redlining it like an a-hole, should be good.

 

I've thought about it. But right now I can't seem to go more than 200 miles at a time without something stupid going wrong. My car is also modded to hell.

I have done three 2000+ mile trips in 3 different FCs over the past 8 years, I've never had a problem. I won't do it again though..

why does this question seem to constantly come up
my answer is if you have to ask the question then you probably shouldn't because you must be cutting corners somewhere with your maintenance or have problems with your car that you overlook because your too lazy to fix them.
Im pretty sure when they sell any car there is no limit on how far you can drive it otherwise the public has been fooled greatly. (except of course these new electric cars that only have a 200 mile limit etc)
Ive done the round trip from upstate ny to san diego two times in an RX-7 and didn't think twice about whether I would make it or not. Was cursing at myself the time I did it over the summer in my black one with black leather interior that I removed the AC from and it hit 110 going through texas but thats another story.

 

Drive through Texas at night, all night! 12 hours across Texas!


Maybe you should go via Omaha?

 

I have an 89 convertible with a full TII swap. The engine is street ported, full 3" exhaust, and various other mods. I recently drove it over 1000 miles across three states and the last half of the trip in pouring rain. No problems at all and returned 23 mpg to boot.

 

A buddy of mine drove his 20b FC from Chicago to California. Bridgeported with a GT42r on it running it at 22psi. Something stupid like 700hp. Steep gears, Liberty LSC5000. Most of the highway driving was up around 4000rpms. Car made it there running just as perfect as it did pre trip.
If a car like that can make it, Im sure a T2 could, just make sure you're all preped and ready, something could break, hell, a stock Camry could break on you even.

 

I drove from Texas to South Carolina and back in my 88 TII. My window is the only thing that broke.

Every car is different, bro. Just take your tool set in case something happens.

 

I'm gonna try to make it to DGRR '10 from California with some friends, if schedule allows.

 

Most of the driving ended up being done at night but when I started out it was brutal
I just ended up driving for like an hour and stopping for an hour because I couldnt stand it. I didnt know what was worse the window closed with no air flow or the window open feeling like someone was holding a hairdryer in front of my face.
And I think it only took me like 2 hours to get across Texas....then again I was on Route 40 going through the northern tip near Amarillo :-)
Of course I stopped and ate my 72 oz steak in less than an hour

 

I love the 80 mph Texas speed limits.

 

Back in July I drove from Waco, TX to Youngstown, Ohio to visit my dad and back a week later (1304 miles each way) in my TII. It took 18 hours and was averaging 80-90mph getting 20-22mpg on a large streetport.

Did perfectly fine, only problem was it ate a belt (pulleys are either warped or alternator bracket is out of line) and I brought a spare knowing it was gonna happen.

 

if someone was down to go to cali or smothing for an event right now i would grab 23832704957 sets of plugs 2k for gas and roll. I have yet been able to drive it longer than 15min at a time with the new setup somthign always happens

 

I wouldn't drive a TII across the country just cause its uncomfortable as hell...and besides that, with the TII drivetrain the car is at like 4k at 80mph (typical cruising speed), ***** ridiculous. I have a long drive up to VA in a couple of months and I'm not looking forward to it.
