Worn engine/tranny mounts

Just looking for advice on this.

My car shutters when engaging the clutch in 1st. When on/off the throttle, the car bucks like freakin crazy.

There's definitely a LOT of slack in my driveline somewhere.

Seeing as how the shifter bushing are non existant, I can only imagine the engine and tranny mounts are the same way.

Would I be better off just buying the $60 Engine torque brace, and saving some money, or will the only real way to fix this be buy dropping about $150 on the engine and tranny mounts?

(also, are there any Mazdaspeed mounts I can get, which would be more solid?)

I would recommend replacing the engine and tranny mounts first.

The engine torque brace (IMO) will help eliminate further driveline slop AFTER you replace the engine/tranny mounts. If you decide to go w/ the engine torque brace first, you have only applied a temporary band-aid to mask the real problem.

Mazdaformance has the "Mazdaspeed Motorsports" mounts that you need. (Motor, Tranny, and Differential)

Mazdatrix and some other reputable RX-7 shops may be able to get them for you as well. These mounts are made of a rubber that is significantly stiffer that the "normal" OEM offering.

Putting the engine brace in without first replacing the mounts is like a band aid on a festering knife wound...

Get the mounts.. you'll thank yourself.. get them from mazdatrix, and while you are at it, get a shifter bushing kit.. you won't believe the difference, takes the slop right out of the shifter handle.

I have pulled engines out and had the mounts fall off on the floor cause the rubber had split in two.... this is a BAD thing....

The biggest thing the engine brace helped me with was shifting into third on the strip... it made it MUCH more precise and i haven't done the accidental shift into fifth since i put the brace on

btw, how many of each do I need? From what I'd imagine, I'd need two engine and one transmission. I've looked in the manual, and it shows a picture of the engine mounts, but says nothing about them, and doesn't even show a tranny mount. Could someone let me know? I plan on buying these soon. Thanks.

You need two engine mounts and two tranny mounts.

I'd also replace the trany crossmember along with the tranny mounts. My crosmember's middle rubber peice was 99% gone.

I agree w/ 1987RX7guy's comment about replacing the tranny crossmember. Just be sure to order the right one.

Mazdatrix tranny/diff troubleshooting page.

Tranny mounts/crossmember info and pricing (just to give you an idea)

Here is the Diff mount section, too.

cool, thanks!

I can't stand the shakiness (for lack of a better word) of my drivetrain! Driving around the city is so damn frustrating. Now I just need warmer weather to show up so I can get this done
