WooHoo newb clutch questions

Okay I searched and didn't find what I was looking for. Alright the time has come to get a new clutch and I need good info to base things off. So the clutch on my 7 was a racing beat 6 puck and a racing beat pressure plate(I bought it like that). The thing is totally trashed but the stock flywheel is still good. I got used to the feel of it and it kinda grew on me.

So what is the differance between the 4 and 6 puck? If I am shooting for 300hp to 340ish what is a smart buy for a daily driven s4 t2?

School me rx7club.

Center Force

Hi i've just replaced my clutch, Was going to go standard but in the end bought a CENTER FORCE DUAL from Mazdatrix.

Verdict is awesome! The clutch is the perfect balance of everything you would want. It has 90% more torque capacity over standard that means 350 bhp should be fine. The pedal is still light and very usable.

As the clutch beds in it just gets even better, good buy and only cost around $300.

when i had the clutch fitted i also had the flywheel skimmed, It's good a good idea to get the most out of the clutch. Also remember all the seals and bearings

The less pucks a clutch has the stronger it holds. From what I'v read on this forum, pucked clutches aren't really ideal for daily driving. They wear out quicker than plated discs and are in some cases more difficult to drive smoothly. I drive a near stock n/a so I'm not a good example, but my co worker is knocking on 300hp's door in his 88 T2 with a T70 and he's still using his OEM t2 clutch with no slipping.

If you get a puck style clutch I would may sure it is a sprung hub and not a solid one, or you can damage/break the tranny if you abuse it. I personally think they are too hard on the flywheel to bother with. I would go with a ACT extreme PP. They only offer one disk, but it will hold 443 lbs torque. They also have a HD PP with the same disk that will hold 330 lbs. I have a ACT Extreme and SR flywheel and I have been beating the **** out of it for a year now and is still strong as it was new, but it does has a rather stiff peddle.

Definitely get a sprung disc.

I drove an ACT 6 puck sprung disc w/ ACT PP on the street, everyday for two years. It's not nearly as bad as people will make it out to be. Heavy pedal like socal mentioned though.

BTW ACT doesnt make a sprung puck style disk as far as I read. I will look again at the application cart on there site to see what the deal is.

***EDIT***

Act DOES NOT make a sprung puck style disk, only solid for t2's.

alot of people told me that puck clutches shift a bit more rough and are a bit uncomfortable for DD. but, if you already had a 6 puck, i dont see how bad it could be since your used too it. i ended up going with a stock exedy clutch.

thats a great place to buy a clutch. good customer service, great shipping, and generally the best parts company ive purchased from.

Just get an ACT street/strip. I have one on my FC and it gives a nice firm feel with no slip. My NA has an open exhaust, otherwise stock. The clutch hooks really well.

And be ready for the woes of pilot bearing removal if you're doing it yourself. BY the Mazdaspeed tool, or I can show you the tool I made to use.
