Won't start first try
The other day I went for a drive, about an hour, drove pretty hard. I was getting low on gas so I filled up and then went home. 20 minutes after I had shut it off I went to start it again. It reved up to 1k then dropped and died. Tried again, went up to like 1.5k, dropped down to zero, went back up then went down and died. Ok one more time, I started it up and gave it a little gas, idled fine after that.
Next time I started it it was fine, went for a drive and stopped at the store for 15 minutes, started it up again and it did the same thing.
Do I have to give it some time to cool down or something, or perhaps I'm flooding it? My buddy seemed to think I need new spark plugs. It was running perfect before, just got the car a few weeks ago.
It's an 88 GX. Any help appreciated.

I would check the plugs, and if that doesn't work, your injectors may be leaking. If they are, you should either get them rebuilt or install a fuel pump cutoff switch.

If this car keeps doing this on a regular basis, I'd start to suspect that the fuel pump isn't staying energized for one reason or the other. I'd put a voltmeter pos lead in the back of the blue wire on the fuel pump connector and the neg to a good ground. And observe whether it remains at 12v after you let the key return to the ON position from the Start position. The way it works is when you turnt the key to START, a relay pulls in and energized the pump. When you let the key go back to ON position, there is a micro sw in the afm that takes over and supplies the 12v to the fuel pump. Perhaps your getting the 12v when turning to START, but when you let go, the micro sw in the afm isn't doing its thing, which means the fuel gets cut off. I like this scenario better than sparkplug problems and injector problems. Its more interesting. On the other hand it could be the sparkplugs or injectors. Who knows.
