Does it go into gear with the car off? Or does it never go into gear?

it goes in like butter while the car is off. i checked everything when i was putting it back together. i also cleaned the inside of the bell housing cause i looks like the rear main seal is a little leaky. but im gonna be doing a full jdm t2 swap later this year so i just need it to last until about August if not a little sooner.

If you shut the car off, put it in gear, try and start the car, the car will try and move, indicating that the main shaft is turning from either the clutch disc not releasing fully, or the pilot bearing is gone, which I doubt as it is new.
Look under the car to see if the fork arm moves when depressing the clutch, and has full travel.

try rebleeding your clutch slave. It might need to be bled again. If that doesnt work then it could be the pressure plate. Could also be clutch disc is too thick. I had a problem like that happen to me once on a honda crx. Changed the clutch with a new one and it wouldnt go into gear unless off. Took it out again to find out the clutch disc they supplied was too thick and wouldnt really disengage off the pressure plate.

This is more likely then you think, if the OP used a bolt to pull the trans together then the pilot bearing is toast.

easiest way to see if your clutch is releasing is to watch the release fork move when someone is pushing the clutch pedal. no travel means no hydraulic pressure in circuit. if no movement, bleed clutch circuit again. if it goes through the gears fine with the eng off, that means the shift forks and hubs are moving properly. and if these things check out, chances are the pilot bearing is stuck to the input shaft.
there are some other things to check, but you will be doing that clutch job again to check them!

when i was putting it back in the transmission was supported and no weight was put on the input shaft and no play was on it. i greased up the bearing a good bit. i finally was able to see how much movement was on the clutch and it was minimal and the pedal feels really light. so im in the process of rebuilding my master cylinder. the rings around the piston are shot so i just need to get all this put back together. but an unfortunate thing is my water pump went so im waiting on that to come later today.

How did you mate the trans? Did you use the bolt trick at all?

It sounds to me like you busted the pilot bearing instead of destroying all 6 synchos at once.

no bolt trick just slid right in and the clutch disk only is able to go in one way with the side that protrudes going in to the pressure plate.

take it from me. never trust a friends word. i would push in the clutch and he said the fork was going all the way but i had my dad push the clutch and its not going all the way. so ive already rebuilt my master now for stainless steel and either rebuild or new slave. then hopefully it will work.

ok really good news its going just fine. just need to adjust the pedal.

if anyone ever gets this problem.

ok put it in gear have the ebreak on and foot on the clutch. (i know sounds really bad but it worked) and start the car. my dad did this and he said he thinks the transmission was bound up for some reason. well that how he got it to work. i just wish i had known this a while ago. cause i would have been able to make it to the car show up in Pleasanton last month.
