Is it a wise choice to put an IC/ECU on a fresh engine?

Hello, i have an 88' vert on a freshly rebuilt Turbo S5 engine. Engine has a mild port (exhaust and intake), wastegate porting, Walbro 255lph fuel pump, aeromotive FPR, stock intake (for now) and racing beat rev TII exhaust system. For now, i'm trying to get in as many miles as i can so i can finally boost :-) Question is can i install an aftermarket intercooler (front mount) and/or ecu (Haltech) before the break in period or do i have to wait? Thanks

Your Haltech tuner will need to run the engine through all of the load bands (boost levels) in order to tune it proplerly. He could just tune the vacuum and low boost levels until the break-in period is over, or break it in on a dyno, but otherwise you should probably wait until the engine is fully broken-in before adding the Haltech EMS. This is really something that you should discuss with your tuner.

The intercooler will be fine. I assume you have a FCD?

Ok, i'll wait for the break in then. No, i do not have an FCD, i just watch my boost gauge and rpm's and try to make sure i don't boost. I'm considering installing a boost controller right now.

A FCD will not be necessary once you install the Haltech EMS, but in the meantime your stock EMS will hit overboost fuel cut due to the aftermarket exhaust system.

A boost controller can raise boost, but it can't lower it. You may want to check in the Haltech forum to see if it is better to just use the Haltech EMS for boost control rather than a separate unit.

You can use a haltech ECU now with a base tune that will allow you to drive around and do your break in no worries. Not to toot my own horn, but I made my own tune just by reading and I have been driving the car no problem. 1 Year ago I knew NOTHING and I was able to get my car running. Recently though I asked someone to make a tune for me until I get it done professionally.

I give you props beefhole for tuning your own car. Not too many guys would have the ***** (or ****-if your a girl) to tune their own car. I will try and pay Enzo a visit and see what he says, recommends, or does. Thanks!

^^ I did the same thing myself. But I'm an ******* who could no resist and it blew before going in to get a full tune from Shookmotorsports. Which was tomorrow. For the 16th!!!!

I had daily driving and +4 psi. But I the turbo spiked to 10psi and game over. Next time, I just won't hit boost until the haltech get a full tune, my haltech was never ran so I used a base map off this site in the haltech forum.

LOL, i've spent a lot of time waiting and a pretty penny finding and getting the engine rebuilt. My number one priority is to not blow the engine while breaking it in.

So what RPM are you shifting at? Right before you start hitting boost right?

On local streets, about 3,000 rpm. If i have to get on the highway, 4,000 rpm max. It sucks driving like an old lady LOL

screw that. i had a new engine, new ems, and a fresh bnr stage one. after the idle settled to where i wanted it to be and the compression was on the high side, i took it out and started tuning it immediately.

maybe 300 miles on the rebuild?
