wireing harness questions.

I am in the process of dropping in a new engine and i am also going with a haltech e6k. I am starting to have some questions about the old wiring harness. I took the harness on the passenger side out and then noticed that some of the connectors that I need where on a harness thats on the driver side of the car. so my question is do I take the harness out thats by the driver side or do I leave it there?

This is not the answer you want.......but there is a Haltech section on this site. Just FYI. Then again, some of those other sections are not very active.

take out the EM harness, leave the rest. i learned the hard way. save your wiper harness from the EM harness.

n/a engine harness

My question is: is there a way to take of the engine harness off an a 1986 13b s4 motor without taking off the upper intake manifold or cutting the harness? My giant hands can't seem to fit inside to undo the electrical connectors. Im in the middle of doing a swap and the only thing holding me up is 2 connectors buried under the intake manifold.

Nope. Gotta remove the upper intake manifold if your not going to remove the EM harness from the interior. Frankly, the upper intake (dynamic champer)on a non turbo series four, is a pretty easy thing to remove.

Under there you have the two primary injector plugs plus the water thermo sensor plug plus the ring terminal for the ECU ground wires.

Or you could cut the harness in two, and then resplice them later (humor)

EDIT: a lot of people just remove the connectors inside the passengers foot well.........then pull that part of the EM harness out into the engine bay, then remove the engine with all the wiring connected to the engine. I think that's the way the FSM does it also.

I attached a jpg of someone elses EM harness laying on the floor. You can see the part of the harness that goes in the passengers foot well. Its the part where I have a couple of redlines. If you look real hard, you can see the large, black grommet that fits in the bulhead hole b/t the passengers foot well and the engine bay.

Personally, I don't remove the harness in the foot well. I just pull the upper intake and remove the harness there and then pull the engine. To each his own, as they say. I mean, if I'm pulling a engine out, it's to do a overhaul and the upper intake will be coming off sooner or later. Plus I don't like working in the cramped foot well trying to undo elect plug etc.

Thanks Hailers, exactly what I needed to know. Im doing a engine swap and im not using the 13b engine that was in the car (blown rear rotor) so I have to put the harness on the new motor which is also a 13b. Cutting the harness IS NOT an option! I hate splices with a passion. For me its much easier to swap motors then it is to rebuild them which is why i didn't want to rip it to pieces. I guess the manifold is coming off then. Is this a blessing in disguise? with the manifold off I could polish it?!?

Can you tell me if I need a new gasket to put in the upper intake manifold or can I get away with an atv type gasket maker???? Does the temperature rating of the atv gasket maker play a huge role here? I suppose I could always make a new gasket out of cardboard if i had to.

Slightly off topic but is there any advantage to port matching here on either the intake or exhaust ports. Im using an aftermarket header pipe similar to the racing beat headers???? They look like the matching is close but looks can be deceiving.

ATV???? I guess I could Google, but I assume it's RTV or the like???? What you might do is reuse the one there if it looks servicable, or you can go to the local auto store and buy gasket making material and use an exacto knife to make one. A little time consuming but doable.

I wouldn't use RTV alone. I do use a smear of RTV on most gaskets. A smear. A little story........I took a upper intake off an engine I worked on for someone else, and it had BUGGERS hanging in the intake ports/runners from someone using a lot of RTV to make a gasket. Not a good thing. A smear is a smear. It helps you out when you take the gasket off at a later time in life. It acts more or less like a release compound and you can remove the residue with your finger nails. And of course it also does a bit of sealing of the gasket to the manifold. A smear is a smear. Hard to describe a smear. Not a gob, that's for sure. You don't want a lot of *squeeze out*. Wrote a bit too much here. I'm not that much into porting and matching. No answer on that. Should reasonably match imho.

yes sorry... rtv. My mind must have been wondering onto 4-wheelers lol. I think I got my answer. Basically I need a gasket for the intake, weather I re-use or go new. Rtv sealent is a good idea but only skim coat to get even coverage. I would think torquing the bolts upon reassembly is also important as would be heads on a v8 motor. So I guess im all set. thanks for the tips.
