Wire on ACV is Fried!
I was Looking around the engine compartment of my 86 rx-7 NA today and i saw that the wire on the lower left side of the air control valve was fried, like it shorted and burned the plastic and the wire. Not sure if the lower left is the split air or port air solenoid wires. The engine seems to idle ok, but i am not sure how long it has been this way, and if i have to replace the entire ACV or can i get just the piece with the wire that screws into the valve. Any idea's what this does if it is not making a connection because of being fried? And does anyone have an ACV i can buy. Thanks for the Help
Switching solenoid. Has 12v constantly. Has a ground put to it when your in fifth gear. Sucks a poppet out of the way and increases dramatically the flow of air to the catalytic converter.
I'd put 12v to it and a ground to see if it pulls in or not. Be careful taking the solenoid out of the acv. A very small spring can be lost in a heartbeat. Small poppet also.
See if there is 12v on the black/white wire. You might be able to just splice the wire together and make like new.

I just looked at it again and the wire is burned where it goes into the plastic next to the threads, even the plastic is melted so there is not enough wire to splice it back together to make the connection again. Any idea where the short originated from, maybe within the threaded sensor?
Yep. Coulda been the solenoid itself. Probably too far gone to tell right now. Could put a meters positive lead on that wire that is left on the solenoid and the other meter lead to the base of the solenoid and see if you've got a dead short.
You might put a meter on the plug that goes to the solenoid and see if there is 12v on the black/white wire when the key is to ON. Should be there. If not.......a fuse be gone bye, bye. Or worse. I don't have a schematic with me at this time so I know not which fuse or what other items are tied into this black/white wire. I'd bet money the black/white wire on the PORT AIR SOLENOID is spliced into the same wire at the Split air solenoid.

i tested the black wire that goes to the solenoid with a volt meter and it is hot still, so it didnt fry the harness. I found a junk yard that might have one here in riverside, can i use the ACV from 86-88 on my 86. As long as the donor is not a turbo?

I have a 3 yr old ACV that I am willing to part with If you are Interested. PM me If you are Interested. Infact, I recently had It, with pics, In the 2nd Gen For Sale Forum. Check It out.
