Wiper switch malfunctioning

Last night I went to the store, used the wipers to clear off the frost. When I shut the wipers off, they wouldn't stop at all in any positon. So tonight I pulled the dash surround off and swapped in 2 different spare wiper switches I had in the shop around.

Neither one works properly, but both of them do the same thing. The mist, intermittent and high speed do not work, but low speed does and the wipers will not park. Since both of the replacement switches are functioning in the same manner, I suspect the fault lies elsewhere, but I have no idea where to look or why the wipers are acting as such.

Any ideas or suggestions, ideas? I can get by with one of the replacements for a while, but this is my DD and I do need to perform a proper repair. Could it perhaps be in the wiper motor motor itself? I do have a spare one of those that I can swap out.

I spend most of my time in the 1st gen section since my 105k 2nd gen has been trouble free for nearly 6 years. The following link is why I'm a regular in the 1st gen forum. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=462184

Thanks, Scott.

Actually, teh fault is in the wiper switch itself, but is so common that a huge number of wiper switchs have the problem. You can either fix it yourself or send it to Icemark (www.mazdamark.com) to get it fixed. To do it yourself you will need fairly good soldering skills and supplies. You basically replace the relay that went bad, you can get them from the site I linked to as well for 15 bucks, IIRC.

Yep, probably all those switches you tried are bad. I had the same situation with mine. I won a rebuilt switch on ebay. Came from Icemark.

My wiper switch is bad too. I checked out the mazdamark site but I couldn't find where they sell the relay for 15 bucks. Am I blind?

I had the same exact problem and just bought a complete rebuilt switch from Icemark - definitely worth it.

relay1 or relay6 will work on this page:

http://www.mazdamark.com/prod01.htm

Or already rebuilt on this page:

I was hoping you would chime in Icemark. So do I really have 3 bad wiper switches, or is it something else?

The most common failure is that the main relay fails. If it does, you loose Hi and intermittent settings. Usually the wiper does not stop at rest when the switch is turn off.

If just the low speed is not working, then typically the 2nd relay has failed.

OR

You can also have a bad wiper motor, which then looses Hi/Intermittent or Low, but usually the wiper stops at rest when the switch is turned off, or never stops without pulling the fuse.

So point me in the right direction for the relay I need from you. I would rather rebuild an engine than figure out/mess with electrical. Also where is this relay located.

Didn't realize the relays were part of the switch. Looks like I will be ordering a reconditioned one from you. Thanks for your time and help.

Wait, I just re-read your post. You said that it wouldn't stop, right? You also said that it won't park, but thats where it stops as soon as you turn the wiper off and doesn't go back to the down position. If it won't stop at all, then it sounds like the wiper motor itself is bad, not the switches. It could be that the motor and both of the replacement switchs are bad, but not the one that was in the car originally.
Look at what Icemark posted, and see which of those describes what happened before you switched in the replacement switchs.

Mine only works on the high setting but seems to stop ok. So I take it that I don't want relay #1 or #6, but I should replace the other relay?

you only need the relay1 (our P/N Relay1 or Relay6) if the High and or intermittent position is not working, and you need the 2n relay (our P/N Relay2) if the low speed is not working.
