I priced a windshield and install here recently, and the place here in town wants $475 for it... I guess thats what happens when you live in a small town...

most FC's have the built in antenna...well at least i know S5's do. only the factory radio makes use of it though. its right in the center, you can see 2 thin wires that are like the thickness of hair running veritcally.

It is called a diversity antenna system. They work together to give a good signal. One without the other = poor reception.

The system chooses the antenna with the best reception. If the windshield is getting a better signal, that is what your radio will play, otherwise, it will choose the 'retractable' signal.

Even from the dealer? After all my miles, it is time to replace the windshield.

that makes no sense. why would one without the other have poor reception if the system only uses one at a time?

i have an s5 with the antenna windshield i would happily sell if i had it replaced with a new windshield. i dont use the radio ever. i have no use for any antenna.

Then perhaps I should say poorer reception...

At times, the signal received by the antenna in the windshield may not always be as good as the signal at the other end of the car. In those cases the signal used would be the one from the rear.

This system is designed to compensate for "momentary" signal dropout experience by car with only one antenna.

I just had my windshield replaced when my car was in the shop at it was $225 installed. This windshield was an OEM replacement and had the antenna built into it already. Any body shop should be able to do it.

I have been thinking about this as well. My windshield is pitted all over from age.

My question is a little different though. The trim around the windshield I have is gone aroudn the top and broken/chipped away on the sides. in getting a new windshield is this normally replaced? or do we have to get this part somewhere else?

The S5 windsheild antenna on a windsheild w/upper tint is the same as the S4 one (NAGS (North American Glass Standard) P/N TW522) so who ever posted that is smoking something.

The Victoria British catalog has the windshield glass for 250 I think.

It's be better to just let a glass shop do it for you in my opinion.
