Windsheild Removal

I searched but to no avail as usual. Maybe my search feature is broken? Ha, anyways, as we all know FC windsheilds crack at the drop of a hat, or the swing of a fist, in my case. A shop around here quoted me for around 300+ for windsheild installed, **** THAT. Im sure i can get a windsheild for 50-100 bucks and try to do it myself. Anyone have any tips on how to do it? A good write-up would be nice. From what i have heard use a bass guitar string (the kind that are wraped/grooved) and a handle on each side (like a broom stick sized dowel) and feed it through all easy and then saw my way to get it out. Anyone want to add to that? What about where the dash it, that seems like a PAIN in the *** to get to. Do you have to remove the dash?

Thanks guys, sorry so long and drawn out.

From my experience glass is not a d.y.i. job-if you break the shield or have leakage you will be in for just as much.

From all I heard...I agree with pmr2000. My windshield is cracking too. I will be getting it prof. done, and just eat the price.

300 is a bit much, $200-$250 sounds better.
Have you actually gotten any prices for the glass only?
Not too many shops will bother selling it to you. By the time you buy what you need, and try to figure it all out, just pay the money and have it done. Even if you did get it out and get the new one in, you would be lucky if it didnt leak.

Never did a 7, a couple of Firebirds and Camaros though. Did just what you suggested. After cutting seal, cleaned out sealant, then applied correct sealant (thickness), put new glass in, no problems other than breaking a couple of wires from the "sawing". When you get most of the sealant cut, you can push the windshield out from the inside.

well I have heard differnt you can replace it you just need the to get a seal in good condition, some realy strong gasket material may work but you'll have to use a crap load of it. From my understanding you need an L shaped knife specificaly used for windshield removal, you sould be able to find it at a mass auto parts supply like Northern Tool or something along those lines the web site is www.northerntool.com. Though you'l prolly be spending anywhere from 40-70 bucks just for the knife, I got a quote and the junkyard glass replacement place for 150 bucks, and as soon as I get my car back on the road thats what I'm gonna do, Its a Pick-N-Pull and I'd imagine that most Pick-N-Pulls have a glass installing place near or at the junkyard, and I belive thy charge like 30-40 buck more if you want that antena that is on the windshield...any other questions

oh yeah for got to mention, it is deffinatly atleast a 2 person job, though 3 would be better.....

For the people that are going to get an aftermarket windshield, be very cautious. Check shade, tint, to compare to your original windshield. Some manufacturers will have only a very light tint in their replacements and some deformity may be evident.

usually you cant pick and pull the windshield, and if you do they require you pay them first incase you break the windshield pulling it out.

One of the joys of a new windshield is how nice and clean and scratch free it looks, its worth every penny, why bother with a used one?

I remember paying $200 like 3 years ago, so that sounds right.

use a guitar string to cut the old one out of the other car... I've never installed one, but that's how I've removed one.

WOW, what responses. Thanks guys, i guess im going to do what John here says and call somewhere else. I called Bussy and they gave me that quote. Screw that. They wanted i think 220 for the blank windsheild alone, it was new though.

Well, thanks again, maybe someone can search this up someday.

Man, if you can get a whole new windshield put in for $250 or so, do it, it's worth it. That job is no fun whatsoever.

And if you get a ding/chip, get it fixed right away or it could crack the whole windshield.
