Question Will the Rex make a cross-country trip????

My squadron is sending me to school in Va for 16 weeks (im based in California). I dont want my car to just sit around for all that time, I want to bring her with me. Im just kinda worried about the milage and constant driving that Id be doing on a road trip like that. My car is a 1990 GTU with a Mazda rebuild that has about 10000miles on it right now. Im replacing the tranny with a 5spd in the next month or so. I need some thoughts before i go through with this, my parents say dont, my friends say go for it........ what do you all think?
p.s...... has any of you done this before?

Sounds like fun! Just bring a small tool box and some fluids.

What makes you think an RX-7 will be different to any other car on a long trip? Why do people think they're so fragile when used in completely normal driving conditions, but are quite happy to thrash the crap outta them at other times?
Have a little faith man!

Saying it wont make it across the country is like saying it wont make it to its next oil change or two. Highway driving is less stressfull on your car than city.

as long as you maintain the car well, it won't let you you down on the road. like everyone said, just bring the things that make sense (for any car) extra alternator belt, oil (2-3 quarts), water or antifreeze pre-mixed, and tools. if you want to REALLY ****, like me , then bring spare radiator hoses, too.

but the car will be fine as long as you took care of it. just make sure that you change the oil in that new tranny if that's what you plan to take the trip with.

I have faith in her, its just that my family is saying that because its a 12yo car it wont make it. i was planning on doing it anyway as long as i can get that tranny in there. but thanks for the opinions just makes me realize how glad i am to be a rex owner. i maintain her religiously and i always travel with tools, just in case. good call on the belts, never thought of that

1st road trip 950 miles--no problem
2nd road trip 1100 miles--no problem
Both trips took almost 24 hours(food/drink/gas...breaks).
Car didn't even hiccup! Top off oil at every fillup.

Bring your Visa/MC/Disc/Amex

Check/test/replace EVERYTHING that could go wrong. I have faith in my car because of impeccable preventive maintenance and TLC.

Everything=ALL fluids/hoses/belts/filters/tires/plugs/fuses/relays/credit limits/patience/and ANYTHING that can be set/adjusted/cheaply replaced/burst/slip/break/leak/......

I know that I forgot something.

my gov credit card should cover any unfortunate incidents
so my family says no, i always listen to their advice, but they dont understand the power of the rotary therefore i am going anyway, as long as the navy lets me drive. and as long as i can get that 5spd in there.
thanks for the advice all.
