Maybe a strange co-incidence but after I turbocharged my n/a (using the n/a trans..) it wouldn't shift into 3rd at the drag strip.

Was very annoying..

gearbox broke later that night...

This is probably due to your motor/tranny mounts.. if they are old, they are most likely shot!! The higher torque on your engine causes the motor to twist to the right (as viewed from the drivers seat), when you hit the clutch to shift, the motor slaps back to the left (and the tranny as well), thus offsetting the shift pattern as you try to slam third. Most often you hit the gate between third and fith, sometimes you will find fith in the position where third should be under normal driving.

Mazdatrix sells competition versions of both the tranny mounts and the motor mounts, they are still rubber and made exactly like the stock ones, but they are much stiffer than stock and shouls sove the problem. You could also go with the banzai racing poly motor mounts that i have, which REALLY stiffen up the motor, but, at the expense of a lot of vibration transfer....

Another "quick fix" is an engine torque brace. I think both racing beat and mazdatrix have them. but this should only be used in addition to new motor mounts, as running a brace with bad mounts will lead to other problems.

I have the same problem if I rush the 2-3 shift.

Synthetic gear oil helps.
Good shifter bushings help.
A short throw shift lever helps.
Taking excess slack from the throttle cable helps.
Adjusting the height of the gas pedal helps.
Slowing down the 2-3 shift timing just a little helps.

Could also be bad pilot/throwout bearing.
