Question Will this mess up my tranny?

I have my car on jackstands and I just finished installing my engine on it. The transmission has no fluid in it right now. I wanted to turn the engine on to see if it starts and I was just wondering if my tranny will get messed up while the engine is running. I have no intentions of putting it in gear or driving it (have no wheels ) Anyone?

Make sure the clutch is depressed the entire time the engine is running, otherwise you'll be spinning the gearbox's input shaft.

Keep the clutch pressed in, and the tranny wont even spin. That wont hurt it.

one more question...

when I press on the clutch, the pedal stays down. It goes down with little or no resistance. Do I need to bleed the clutch fluid? or did I screw something up?

Yep. bleed it. Check your fluid while you're in there. Should be an easy fix unless you see fluid spitting out somewhere.. These cars don't have any kind of return spring I don't think.

Thanks! I checked the car and I did not see any leaks but it was dark outside. I'll check again tomorrow and make sure nothing is leaking.

There IS a return spring on the clutch pedal.

Pull it up and pump it a few times. Sometimes the rod on the slave cylinder gets pushed back in while you have the engine or tranny out. If that doesn't help try bleeding it then.

I bled the fluid today and the pedal got a little better. I noticed that the line right above the bleeder valve is kinda messed up. I think it has a small hole in it and when the clutch pedal is down small bubbles come out of it I have a spare tranny and the hose on it looks OK but I wasnt sure if I wanted to use it or not. How much does that hose run for? How much is a clutch master cylinder? Thanks

That line is most likely your problem. Switch it out, and then bleed it again. That should fix it.
