Can I upgrade to the newer style with raingaurds? Also the factory seemed to have a fabric top in the later years, any differences? Finally has anyone actually done their own top, and if so how is it done?

I will be doing my own soon I guess,

Thanks,
John

you can upgrade to the newer rainguards yes! it is just the center targa section. if you are getting the top redone, then you can get the guards added on.
NO the newer models didnt come wtih cloth tops...you are probably speaking of the "Robbins" top or similar. i purchased a "robbins" top for my 90 white vert....its a blue cloth top same as used for BMW. if you are doing your top yourself, good luck...better to just pay the upholstery shop and let them worry about screwing up. hope this helped.

one website....can`t remember which last night had .pdf files of dealer part #`s and one was shown as "fabric top" part#FCZ3-R1-210, and FC33-R1-217 as they cloth to cover the targa.

but who knows,

A little late to the party, but yes the tops will interchange. I've got an 89-91 top on my 88 'Vert.

the s-5 will fit and is much better cause of the rainguards i wouldnt reccomend doing it yourself unless you have experience you have to trace the old top for the back window and also i would recommend getting a mazda top i have a robbins top and the back section where that strip bolts to the body is plastic instead of metal so it loops up and dont look to good.Be prepared to spend some $$$$ i paid $1200.00 for mine done by a professional shop which to him 8 hours on the install but i did have to get a new headliner, check the price on a mazda top i think you will be much happier with the end result.
