Could be an old spark plug wire. I've seen it before where they break internally, typically close to an end where it clips to a spark plug or coil. Causes a weird startup, runs kind of ok afterwards.

I'm currently having the same problem with one of my RX-7's...The car starts as if it's on only one rotor, then it goes away. Today, it did it for a long time and when I finally got the car running, I took it for a drive and it seems like it just died on me.

This car used to have a problem (that magically disappeared), where it would drive normal, then it sounded like spark or fuel would cut out on one rotor for a couple of seconds...then it would come back on. It doesnt do this anymore, but the new problem is the funny start up.

So far, I have verified spark at the end of the wires (RB Ultra Wires), and I've removed the plugs and cleaned them. I have also verified the fuel pump is operating when being jumped with the key to "ON". But I can't verify if its turning on while I'm cranking.

Disconnect the return line for example, place in jug, and turn key to start.

My old 79 did this. Just revved it up to 3000rpm for a few seconds and it cleared out. Kinda gurgles when it clears out. I noticed a major improvement when I reconnected the omp and quit premixing. Switching to 10w40 From 20w50 and increasing my air bleed size seemed to help too.

I'm going to have a buddy help me today by cranking while I look at the return line in a jug to see if fuel is coming out.

If its smoking white smoke youre burning coolant not gas.

Something in my coolant system gave out, i was losing coolant and having the same problem on startup.

It was so bad that after topping off the coolant, it'd appear empty the next morning.

On startup smoking like a banshee--pure white smoke.
