Cool

Could be anything from a loose something or other in the dash, to the ignition system interfering with the stereo.

The CPU is in the drivers side kick panel, so you should be able to get your head down there and listen to see if the noise is really coming from the CPU.

I'm having the same problem, or similar. it makes a buzzy/chirpy noise whenever taking off into higher gears.. then goes away, just like he stated.

It's the shifter vibrating. Highly doubt it has to do with the CPU, unless the CPU has found a fault with the power steering and is trying to beep out a code. The issue would then be cold solder joints on the little speaker so that you can properly hear the code.

Seriously it's not the shifter. It's completely RPM dependent. This is in neutral, so that rules out the whole tranny. At first, I thought it'd be the speedo gears going out, but it'll do it while parked. The first time it happened, it was while starting, then it disappeared for two days, then reappeared ever since. Just looking for ideas...it's not killer bees , and it's not the stereo (put the ear to the speakers even...). After 3K with the windows down you can't hear it so it's not too bad, it's only ******* pissing me off at stops...does the CPU have ANYTHING that would make noise? Relays, connections, peizos? If anyone doesn't come up with a clear answer i'm going to go buy a stethoscope and find out where it's coming from tommorow...

Does the beeper in your CPU work correctly? It sounds like it is trying to beep out a code (most likely power steering) and the sound is getting garbled by an intermittant beeper.

here's a thought. If you have power steering. Then it could be the power steering CPU, located under the dash Directly behind the steering wheel. Its a silver box.

Now, the reason it may be power steering CPU is because the engine turns the power steering belt which is monitored by the power steering CPU. Perhaps this CPU thinks something is wrong at certain RPMs and makes a waring buzz, and the shuts up at other RPM ranges?

Hmmm. I never had that type of problem. But when I removed my power steering pump, I got a continuous noise remedied by promptly removing the PSCPU.

Long shot- but check it out.

This sounds like it could be the problem...one thing I have noticed is, there is NO difference in power steering at different speeds. Like I have parking lot control @80 mph...it's kinda scary. Would anyone have a pic of underneath the dash so I can try and unplug it on the way home from work?

though slightly off topic, i remember my friend telling me about how RX7s have a steering control thats dependent on speed. like, the faster you're going, the less sensitive you're steering will be. scary, but in a safe way.

i heard that once you reach a certain speed your power steering shuts off as a "safety precaution". may so you dont yank the wheel and go off the side of the road. i think its just so you dont overreact at high speeds

it could be a shortage in a wire, when a wire usually gets shorted it sounds like that, whether its in a car or in the house

that's gnomes, you dork. I'd say you either have a bad solder (wouldn't be anything new) or your powersteering is farked up, take the belt off and see if it still happens.

Mine did this when I first bought my T2. For some reason there was a non-turbo dipstick in my car. At least that's what I was told. At the time I didn't know better. Well, anyway, my oil was low and the buzzing turned out to be the low oil buzzer going off. Probably not the same issue as your buzzer, but just something to consider.

Guys, if you notice this topic is very old. It's unlikely the original poster is still around.

However, it seems to be a problem with the power steering computer.
