there is no way you can expect any kind of unbiased response to a question like that here. the 2 cars are absolutly nothing alike. you're not even comparing sports car to sports car. i would never consider buying a gti in the first place, let alone in place of an rx7.
if you need another sports car, rx7. if you need a sedan, gti. its pretty simple.
um also...isnt that quite a price difference :P

like i said the rx7 is a 91 n/a i allready own
but i would have to sell the rx7 to get the gti down payment.
from what i have read on it the have just about the some hp but the wieght is the diference
the gti is a vr6 so in all i think i read it have a v6 engine
putting about 172 hp stockim
tired of the availability of parts on the rx7
and my ears would not mind having a quiet ride
for a change

The real issue
Obviously because you considered the GTI a potential purchase in the first place either you don't know or don't care about the biggest (IMO) difference between the two other than rotary vs. piston: fwd vs. rwd.
If you don't do any drifting whatsoever and don't mind fwd oddities like torque steer and such then the GTI would look more like a more attractive option, but I have to question your sanity if you are seriously considering selling a 7 for a heavier, less overall capable car.
In the end of course only you can make the decision because only you know the factors involved and their significances as they relate to your particular situation.
Pick the RX-7!
And besides, the Corrado is far sexier than the GTI.

specially the corrado part being sexier
but in my old age of 29 years old i have had about 6 rx7s 1st and 2ng gens turbo and non turbo
TII are getting hard to find . n/a are hard to get over 200 hp mark.
from what i have seen the 97 gti vr6 has some potetial
and there is more available parts .
and if i need to give people a ride in my car i can do so

GTX
Indeed the GTX is quite difficult to locate in good condition but if that's the kind of car you're interested in not many have the mechanical potential that the GTX does. Just a few months ago a guy brought a GTX that he and his dad use for SCCA rally to our local autocross, and I got to ride in it on one of his runs and I have to say that the visceral feeling of instantaneous acceleration in that thing will put a smile on anyone's face.
But still, you didn't address the issue I brought up before: front-wheel-drive vs. rear-wheel-drive. Is this so insignificant to you that you'd actually consider getting a heavy fwd commuter?

if you have lots of money, buy the GTX. parts for those cars are REAL REAL $$$.. my former mechanic for my FC had one.. told me about the pains of those.. but he said real fun car in the end
and as for the 91 na rx7 or gti vr6..
that's a tough decision for me actually. right now i have an 89 gxl and my sis drives an 01 gti vr6... both modded.
torque is fun, but i get major torque steer in her car which is a downside.
the vr6 is a better daily driver in my opinion.
the gas mileage of both should be the same; you'll need at least 91 in the vr6 which tank is only marginally smaller, whereas the rx7 only needs 87 in its huge tank.
i like how the rx7 is set up. you're really low inside the car. in the vr6, it's really high up. i dont know if this is any different in a mk3 vr6. as for the rest of the interior, late 80s interior compared to mid 90s.
hands down my FC handles a hell lot better and all i have is suspension technique springs compared to her cup kit for her car and both cars have shitty tires
looks is subjective - but both cars modded can look REAL REAL nice.
oh yeah, that gti is gonna be faster than than your FC.
NAs, realistically run mid 15s - high 15s.. i've never seen anyone with a 14 second FC that posted a timeslip so i'm basing my judgement on that.
the gti out of the box runs low 15s (car and driver got 15.1 from a 96 vr6 - that's stock t2 #s right there)... you can add cams, new intake manifold, chip it, etc etc..
oh yeah, both cars are reliable
well that's all i can think of right now.
hope this helps your decision.

well i have an unbias answer cause just bought my Rx7 but i have had a 97 GTI VR6 all modded up and it was a fast little car great handling in turns and a nice ride too. I would say more reliable then the Rx7. I had my GTI in the low 14's with the supercharger on it. I was never really big on racing it thought it had 6 12'' JL's in it for some bang so it was never gonna be fast cause i weighted it down but it was a fun car.

You know I have to laugh at this thread.
I have a good friend that bought a GTI VR6 around the same time I got my 'vert.
To this day, he says he should have bought an RX-7, that the GTI VR-6 just does not compare.
With his GTI, he complains that it has worse handling, less power, and funky FWD (well alone the sexiness of a turtle), and fit and finish lower than a 15 year old Japanese car.
He hits himself on the head everytime he sees my RX-7.
It would be no contest.

i can't believe the GTX was brought up, and in regards to it, don't buy it, ever. it is far too plagued with problems. get a GTi if you want a mushy sedan, keep the 7 if you want a sports car.

if we're talking about a '97 GTI vs. any FC the fit and finish of the car and the quality of the build would HAVE to go to the VW. most cars aren't put together as well as VW/Audi. The VR6 is a stout motor with lots and lots of potential...these cars can't possibly be in the same price range though nor do they perform similarly so why compare them? The VW will give you less headaches than the 7 and will also be easier to increase serious power with. VR6 motors can really be NA monsters!! If you want the sports car get the 7, if you want a touring car thaty won't trouble u much get the VW

The fit and finish is crap on my friends 97.
Orange peal in the factory paint, gaps bigger on one side of the hood than the other. Sunroof that never seals right. Dash squeeks. Its not much better than a Neon.

What I was trying to illustrate is that the GTI VR6 DOES NOT HANDLE better than the FC, however the GTI 1.8 does handles better than the GTI VR6; which would've been a better comparison between the two
Sorry about any confusion!
BTW - Ask me how I know the GTI VR6 is faster than the FC NA Third gear pull between the FC NA & GTI VR6 is a BIG NO-NO!!
