Why RB True Dual Isn't Smog Legal
Why RB True Dual Isn't Smog Legal
Could someone please explain why Racing Beat Road Race setup (and other after market performance exhausts) are not smog legal in states that enforce eCheck legislation. Is there a way to pass the tests? What causes them to fail?
I want the Road Race true dual (header, presilencer, y pipe and mufflers) but Ohio has eCheck. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys.

The reason true duals aren't technically legal pretty much anywhere is simple. If a car comes with an exhaust system that originally meets in a single pipe, it must always have that "type" of system. As no RX7s come with a dual setup (they all "Y") they cannot legally have a true dual setup.
Not that that really matters. I've got a true dual for my car (though it's a tad different then 99% on here).

easiest answer is that a true dual replaces your entire exhaust system and eliminates any and all catalytic converters. to get cats in the mix you'd have to find some skinny *** cats and have a shop weld them in staggered for you, similar to the way the presilencers in the rb true duals are installed.

It's just due to emissions, I'm sure most states don't give a damn if you have an airpump as long as you have cats and pass smog. You can also pass with no cats like I did if you're generous.
lol, you mean you bribed the guy? hahaha nice.
I'd probably goto jail if I tried that here..
Yea the cat is strictly an emissions thing, the rotary already has emission issues, so having them is essential if you want to pass the emissions test.
Where I live, there are NO restrictions on emissions whatsoever, I could run straight pipes, with full streetport and a complete emissions cleanout on my car and the cops wouldn't give a damn.

My buddy had this happen to his 84 300Z. Or you can register the car in Franklin county. :-)

I've never actually had to resort to bribing before. Where I am they either dont care or dont know, usually the later. You have to put my car on a jack to even see if the cat is there. The guy I go to basically makes sure the lights work and thats about it, its great.

Rotarygod is correct, if you spend 300 in repairs and it still fails, than you are exempt for your states emission period. Some states are two years, and others are one.. I'd rather just pay 50 bucks every two years personally..

In California, there is a program called 'CAP' to help you repair you're car if you were "test-only" directed or you have low income. That grant does NOT apply to modified emission systems. LIKE MISSING CATS!
