why is my car dog slow???

hey, i got an 89 gxl about a month ago; since then i've noticed it doesnt feel as quick as it should. i had an 87 auto and it felt faster. i've figured out a side oil seal is bad, or going bad, would this have anything to do with it? the revs seem to just be crawling and no power from about 6000 up.

i've heard about 5th and 6th ports opening? how do i check if they are messed up or other things i could check to see what else could be wrong? because i know this car has more than what it's showing me

You can check to see how the ports work by searching ;p

Look at them physically, now take your hand and pull the throttle assembly and hold it at a high rpm, during this transition, you should see the port actuators move and open. If they are opening extremley slowly, youll have to dissasemble the entire intake system to clean them properly. If you dont want to do that, you can use a can of throttle body medic by gunk and spray the whole can into the intake while the engine is running. It may help.

Read the ground guide in the archive, it usually clears up 90% of hesitation problems. Other than that, injector cleaning and tps adjustment and making sure there are no vacuum leaks are a sure way to get the performance back from your once fast car.

my post was not primarily about the ports, would a side oil seal going bad affect performance of the engine? like loosing compression in a piston engine?

It says right in your last paragraph about your port functionality...
If you have blown oil seals, that could very well mean that you have lower compression than normal, wich will affect performance slightly.

your welcome

slow_2ed_gen: Do you have any symptoms other than slow reving? eg. Hesitation was suggested, but you didn't actually say that it was hesitating. Does it act differently above 6k? Your plugs could be the culpret at high revs, it would be worth checking them.
