Why does a rotary start to "tick"?

Not my car, but a buddies RX-8 began ticking louder and louder everytime he starts it. I assumed injectors ticking louder than normal, but he claims that the rotors are ticking (I don't think he is right). What other possibilities are there?

exhaust leaks tend to sound like valve ticks.Especially around the manifold/turbo area.

It's loud at idle, doesn't really sound like an exhaust leak, and if it is it's one hell of a leak.

The only ticking I've experienced was from the bac valve on my FC. It only did it for a brief time after a rebuild.

That vid didn't seem to work

Check spark plug wires. One might be loose.

Last time I heard something like that it was a thrashed spark plug boot/wire. The boot was holding the wire to the plug but the contact was pulled away and arcing to the block.
