Why do I have a gas pedal sensor?

Car is an 86 5-speed and has always been a 5 speed The FSM describes the 4-pin sensor at the top of the gas pedal as "4-3 & kick down sensor (automatic)". Is there another use for this on 5-speeds? Did I get a bonus part? TIA.

Cruise control related would be my guess.

I thought of this, then again, it's not a simple on off switch. It has a throw ala tps, as well as the distance from the gas pedal is adjustable. These aren't definitive of anything, but it seems a little overkill for a cruise control sensor I would think.

Does this switch look STOCK or have the looks of something not stock. Does the electrical wiring/plug look like the stk connectors?

It might be someones idea of installing a full range TPS sensor for a after market device like a ???? SAFC??

Cruise control wiring/switch I think was on the clutch. Perhaps the car was an automatic and someone before you converted it.

Switch/wiring/connector is stock. Wire colors match the fsm diagram for kick down sensor. Car has definitely not been converted, I cut the trans mounts out a few weeks ago and everything down there is factory. This is a second owner car and the previous one wasn't the modding type but the full range tps did occur to me aswell. I think this probably boils down to a bonus part or it disengages cruise control when the gas pedal makes/breaks the circuit.

i could be for that shift light that comes on when youre in a low gear and high rpms but not punching it. so it tells you to shift up. at least thats what i think, my 87 does it.

I ran across one on a 86 ..it was a 5 speed too,with cruise.
So my guess is that it has something to do with the Cruise control,as I stripped the car of all it's cruise parts, and took the gas pedal assembly as part of the "Cruise install".
I put all the stuff on and it worked,so either I got lucky and did it right, or it was for the Cruise control!
