I have a feeling it has to do with the manufacturing process when they align the body panels.

Next time I'm in Toronto, if you're close, bring your FC by, I'll take a look.

My friend has the same issue with Stance coilovers on his 88 SE.

Cars and models that I have seen this on

88 Convertible with S5 body panels
89 GTU
88 GXL
88 SE
89 GTUs
91 Coupe

quick close this thread before people start complaining when selling your car that the frame is off lol..

jk. but these cars would have looked a hell of alot better if everything was semetrical. i.e. turbo hood scoop is off center due to the intake manifold/intercooler

I was going to raise hell when looking for another FC, but ah, too much energy.

I think the off-center turbo hood scoop is done on purpose for the JDM market, after all, the cars there are RHD.

I'm found out some more interesting things regarding this topic.

I went up to Toronto this weekend, met up with gkarmadi and saw his 86 GXL TII-swapped TD07 S5 front bumper FC, with 7.5" wheels. On the way there, I also saw an S5 stock-looking convertible parked nearby. I took a look at the wheels, it was noticeably offset to the right.

When I looked at gkarmadi's wheels, the wheels were still offset, but nowhere nearly as noticeable. We were only able to discern that the wheels were still slightly offset in relation to the panels by using the finger test. We stuck a finger on the vertical plane against the tire and looked to see how much we could fit under the fender. As expected, the right side was a lot tighter than the left side.

So, some conclusions:

It's harder to notice the offset with S4 body panels vs. S5 body panels.

It's harder to notice the offset with wider wheels than stock.

It still happens, even if you have coilovers.

maybe the driver or passenger side of the car is heavier, so its offset slightly to creat more equal corner balance?

I have a '89 TII we purchased new. All original, no accidents, except for a front bumper cover repaint, so I thought I'd check. Put a long level from the edge of the fender to the floor and measured distance at the center cap. Couldn't believe it, there was a difference, but it was the driver's side wheel that was out about 3/16" more than the PS.

Also have a '91 TII sitting in the pole shed which I checked in the same manner. The PS is out more than the DS about 1/4". Have had the car for 7 years, but don't know the history.

i would say that my drivers side wheel hides in a TON more than my PS wheel, but thats only becuase its been FUBARed twice now.

probably sloppy subframe bushings account for most of this...try and find one with brand new subframe bushings.

The front subframe sits on locators....its not at all like the rear subframe.

I got a big surprise lol. The previous owner of mine was using a spacer on the drivers front lol. I was installing the Coil-Overs and when removed the right side it had a small spacer...

WHY IS THAT??????
I just did an alignment, and measured absolutely eveything. Its just your car.

cool im not crazy... I thought it was just my car that had this issue. Ended up doing 3 alignments from different shops and another 2 alignments with coilovers and replaced all the suspension bushings using a master kit. Still with the weird offset, you notice it more with stock wheels, and even more so lowered because the fender was closer more to the tire on one side then the other, i had to raise it up in fear something might be off. I just figured my ***** broken.
